Rachel Bradford, a 30-year-old woman from Devon, England, has bravely shared her story about developing a rare and excruciating skin condition that makes her feel like she’s “burning alive.” In March 2024, when Rachel was 24 weeks pregnant, she first noticed a red, intensely itchy rash on her body. Despite seeking medical advice, doctors initially dismissed her symptoms as pregnancy-related and not a cause for concern. However, as time passed, her condition only worsened, with her skin feeling like it was on fire and developing blisters. She also experienced numbness and uncontrollable spasms.

It wasn’t until February 2025, almost a year later, that Rachel finally received a diagnosis. She was told that she had erythromelalgia, also known as “burning man syndrome,” which is considered one of the rarest and most severe diseases one can have. Erythromelalgia is a condition that causes extreme heat and changes in the color of the skin, such as redness or darkening, particularly on the soles of the feet. Rachel’s husband, Jack Bradford, 31, revealed that they had to persist in seeking medical help, as initial consultations did not take Rachel’s symptoms seriously.

The couple’s journey led them to Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital, after contacting the UK’s National Health Service helpline for non-life-threatening health concerns. Despite their persistence, they felt dismissed and helpless as healthcare professionals did not provide effective solutions for Rachel’s debilitating pain. Rachel expressed her frustration at feeling unheard and not receiving the support she desperately needed. She explained how the condition has impacted every aspect of her life, from pregnancy and motherhood to her mobility and independence, preventing her from even being able to play with her son.
Following a challenging pregnancy, Rachel gave birth via emergency C-section in May 2024. However, even after childbirth, she continued to experience the agonizing sensation of being “constantly on fire.” Describing her symptoms, Rachel likened the experience to feeling as though her skin was burning alive. Her husband shared the difficulties they faced, with Rachel’s skin changing color and becoming unmanageably hot to the touch. He highlighted the distressing effects of the illness on Rachel, including spasms and temporary loss of feeling in her limbs, which severely limit her daily activities.
In their pursuit of effective treatment and relief, Rachel and Jack have turned to alternative therapy options, including a non-invasive treatment available in Italy. To support their journey towards finding relief for Rachel’s condition, the couple has set up a GoFundMe page. The funds raised will enable them to explore various treatment avenues beyond conventional medical interventions. Despite facing significant challenges and setbacks in their healthcare journey, Rachel and Jack remain determined to seek solutions that can alleviate Rachel’s suffering and improve her quality of life.
The couple also shared their disappointment with the care they received at Torbay Hospital during Rachel’s childbirth, leading to a formal complaint. Similarly, their experience at Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital left them feeling unsupported and unheard, compounding their distress. As they navigate the complexities of managing Rachel’s condition and the emotional toll it has taken on their lives, they are advocating for better awareness, understanding, and care for individuals living with rare and debilitating diseases like erythromelalgia.
Rachel’s courageous decision to share her story sheds light on the challenges faced by individuals coping with rare and painful conditions, emphasising the importance of compassionate and comprehensive healthcare. Her resilience in the face of adversity, alongside her husband’s unwavering support, serves as a poignant reminder of the strength and determination exhibited by those navigating complex health battles. By raising awareness and seeking innovative treatment solutions, Rachel and Jack embody a spirit of hope and resilience in their quest for healing and well-being amidst overwhelming circumstances.
