Carolina Wilga, a 26-year-old backpacker from Germany, was found alive in the remote Australian outback after being missing for 12 days. The Western Australia (WA) Police confirmed her rescue on Friday, July 11, in the Wheatbelt region. Wilga had not been seen or heard from since June 29, 11 days before her abandoned vehicle was discovered on July 10.

In a statement shared by the police on July 14, Wilga revealed that she had “lost control” of her car, suffered a significant head injury, and left her vehicle in a confused state before getting lost. She expressed deep gratitude for the support she received during the search and rescue efforts. Wilga thanked everyone involved and emphasised the sense of community and support she experienced during her ordeal.
Wilga praised the courage, helpfulness, and warmth of the people she encountered in Western Australia, stating that they had made her feel a part of their culture. She credited the outpouring of support for giving her the strength to persevere through the darkest moments of her ordeal. The backpacker extended special thanks to the police, searchers, medical staff, and all those who kept her in their thoughts.
According to reports, Wilga was found barefoot along an unsealed road by farmer Tania Henley, nearly 19 miles from where her car was discovered. She had survived by seeking shelter wherever possible, including in a cave, and sustaining herself with minimal food and water from rain and puddles. Wilga had incurred minor injuries and had been bitten by mosquitoes during her time lost in the outback.
Inspector Martin Glynn of the WA Police described Wilga’s journey as traumatic, noting that she had shown remarkable bravery in the face of adversity. While Wilga’s physical condition was fragile, her survival was hailed as a great outcome by authorities. The full details of her harrowing experience are yet to be revealed, but her resilience and determination have already made her story an inspiring one.
Wilga’s rescue serves as a testament to the tenacity of the human spirit and the power of community support in times of crisis. Her gratitude towards those involved in her search and rescue highlights the importance of unity and compassion in overcoming challenges. As Wilga continues her recovery, her story stands as a reminder of the strength and resilience that can emerge from even the most challenging circumstances in life.
