A Mississippi man found seven hours after a severe motorcycle crash is being hailed as a “miracle” by authorities. Joshua Sumrall, 37, was discovered in a ditch in the 3100 block of Highway 29 North near Soso on Saturday, July 5, after sustaining multiple serious injuries. Sumrall, who was not visible from the road, called authorities to report that he had no idea where he was or what had happened to him, as per KBTX3.

Family members used the Life360 app to locate Sumrall’s whereabouts after realizing he had been missing since 3 a.m. Authorities found him covered in flies and fire ants in the ditch, with injuries consistent with a motorcycle crash. Lance Chancellor, a Public Information Officer, described Sumrall’s survival as a miracle, considering the extent of his injuries and his ability to call for help after seven hours of unconsciousness, according to KBTX3.

Sumrall, upon being found, expressed shock about the situation, saying, “This is the worst thing I’ve ever been through,” according to reports. Despite having his jaw wired shut and sustaining multiple fractures in his legs and arms, Sumrall managed to remain conscious and call for help. He admitted to not knowing where he got the strength from during the ordeal and acknowledged the gravity of the situation, stating, “I don’t know what gave me the strength,” as he spoke to KBTX3.
The motorcyclist also mentioned that he intends to continue riding motorcycles after he recovers from his injuries, indicating his resilience and determination. Sumrall’s damaged motorcycle was found nearby, with plans to repair it once he is fit to ride again. He expressed confidence in fixing motorcycles, as he has been doing so for 14 years, stating, “I’m better at fixing them than riding them, fortunately,” during his conversation with WDAM7.
Community support has begun to rally around Sumrall, with a GoFundMe page set up to assist with his medical expenses. The page has already raised $440 towards its $5000 target. Despite the challenges he faced during the crash, Sumrall’s positive outlook and determination to recover and return to his passion for motorcycles showcase his resilience and fighting spirit.
The Jones County Sheriff’s Office has not responded to requests for comments on the incident as of Friday, July 11. The remarkable survival story of Joshua Sumrall serves as a reminder of the strength of the human spirit and the importance of quick thinking and resilience in the face of adversity.
