When Maggie Spicer welcomed her daughter Emerie into the world, she believed her baby was perfectly healthy. However, a tiny white dot in Emerie’s eye, initially dismissed as harmless by doctors, would lead to a medical mystery that left Emerie partially blind in one eye. This story gained widespread attention after Maggie shared it on TikTok, highlighting the importance of trusting parental instincts.
The dot was first noticed by Maggie on the day Emerie was born. Despite multiple doctors brushing off her concerns, Maggie’s persistence eventually led to a diagnosis three years later. By then, one of Emerie’s eyes had stopped developing properly due to delayed treatment. Maggie’s TikTok video became viral, with her emphasising the significance of pushing for thorough medical referrals.

Even though Emerie passed all her newborn screenings, including vision tests, Maggie’s concerns about the dot persisted. Each time she sought medical advice, her worries were ignored. It wasn’t until Emerie turned three and her eye started turning inward that her concerns were finally taken seriously, leading to a referral to an ophthalmologist.

At age three, Emerie was diagnosed with congenital cataracts in both eyes. One eye had a cataract in the area with the white dot, while the other eye had a posterior cataract blocking signals to the brain. The delayed diagnosis meant that the eye development had been significantly impacted, with surgery becoming necessary.
Maggie recalls the shock of the diagnosis and the challenges of navigating surgeries and treatments with a young child. Emerie, who is now five, wears a contact lens in the affected eye and glasses. Although Maggie and her husband are vigilant about caring for Emerie’s eye, there are more surgeries ahead, including muscle repair to straighten the eye.
Sharing Emerie’s story on TikTok led to messages from other parents who noticed similar symptoms in their children. Maggie’s advocacy for early intervention and thorough medical evaluation has helped other families seek timely treatment for eye issues in their children. She emphasises the importance of trusting parental instincts and pushing for necessary referrals.
Through their journey, Maggie has learned to always trust her gut as a parent and advocate for her children’s health. Each day, she checks in with Emerie about her eye, ensuring she receives the necessary care and support. Despite the challenges, Maggie remains determined to raise awareness and support other parents facing similar medical uncertainties.
