Pixar’s ‘Elio’ film has sparked controversy after reports emerged that queer themes were cut from the final version of the movie. According to a recent article by The Hollywood Reporter, one artist claimed that studio leaders continuously toned down moments in the film that hinted at the protagonist Elio’s queerness.

The anonymous Pixar Animation Studios artist revealed that significant alterations were made to the character of Elio prior to the movie’s release. Examples of scenes that were reportedly removed included one where Elio organises a “trash-ion show” using discarded items on a beach, including a pink tank top, and photos in Elio’s bedroom hinting at a male crush.

Following the exit of original director Adrian Molina, Sarah Ligatich, a former assistant editor for Pixar, expressed disappointment over the changes that were implemented. The final version of the film centers around Elio Solís, an 11-year-old boy scientist who befriends aliens, with a plot twist where he is mistakenly recognised as Earth’s official ambassador.
Voiced by Yonas Kibreab, Elio embarks on a cosmic journey filled with imaginative adventures and unusual encounters. The film’s synopsis describes Elio as a space enthusiast navigating friendships with eccentric alien beings while grappling with his true identity and place in the universe.
In addition to Kibreab, the voice cast includes Zoe Saldaña, Brad Garrett, Brandon Moon, and Jameela Jamil. Saldaña portrays Elio’s aunt Olga Solís, a character originally intended to be the protagonist’s mother and initially voiced by America Ferrera before her departure from the project.
Although Ferrera’s exit was reportedly due to scheduling conflicts, the former Pixar artist indicated that she was disappointed by the lack of Latinx representation in leadership roles following Molina’s departure. The representation and portrayal of characters have been subjects of scrutiny in the production of ‘Elio’.
Despite the controversies surrounding the film’s development, ‘Elio’ is now being screened in cinemas, captivating audiences with its blend of science fiction, friendship, and self-discovery. As discussions continue about the representation of queer themes in mainstream cinema, Pixar’s decision to alter key aspects of ‘Elio’ has sparked debate within the film industry.
The impact of creative decisions on inclusivity and diversity in storytelling remains a pertinent issue, with audiences and industry professionals alike scrutinising the choices made during the production process. The evolution of ‘Elio’ serves as a reminder of the complexities involved in bringing diverse narratives to the big screen and the importance of authentic representation in media.
While the controversy surrounding ‘Elio’ continues to unfold, the film’s storytelling and visual appeal have garnered attention, prompting discussions about the influence of queer themes in mainstream animated films. As Pixar navigates the aftermath of the reported cuts, the future of inclusive storytelling in animation remains a focal point for the industry and audiences alike.
