Renae Plant, the founder of The Princess Diana Museum, embarked on a mission to ensure the preservation of Princess Diana’s iconic fashion pieces. At a recent auction by Julien’s Auctions in Los Angeles, Plant purchased 35 prized items linked to the late Princess of Wales for an impressive sum of nearly $1.9 million, showcasing her deep admiration for Diana and commitment to preserving her legacy. The auction, titled Princess Diana’s Style & A Royal Collection, featured over 300 lots, including never-before-auctioned ensembles previously worn by Diana. Plant’s exclusive interview with PEOPLE shed light on the emotional and financial sacrifices she made to acquire these priceless garments.

In a heartfelt conversation with PEOPLE, Plant shared the extent of her dedication to preserving Diana’s legacy, revealing that she had to secure the funds by taking out a fourth mortgage on her home. Despite not being affluent and relying solely on donations, Plant felt a strong responsibility to ensure these historical artifacts were not lost. Alongside her husband, Livinio Stuyck Sanchez, Plant explained that their commitment to preserving Diana’s memory has led them to mortgage their home multiple times, underscoring the passionate pursuit of honouring the late princess.

The significant pieces obtained by Plant at the auction included Princess Diana’s renowned “Caring Dress,” elegant evening gowns crafted by renowned designers Elizabeth Emanuel and Catherine Walker, multiple pairs of the princess’s shoes, and the peach plume hat worn during her honeymoon sendoff with Prince Charles. One poignant moment during the auction was when Plant secured the “Caring Dress” for $520,000, visibly moved by the emotional value attached to the garment. Designed by Bellville Sassoon, the dress symbolises Diana’s compassion and humanitarian spirit, embodying the ethos of the Princess Diana Museum.
Plant’s unwavering dedication to collecting Diana’s wardrobe extends far beyond mere fashion; for her, it is about preserving historical artifacts that encapsulate Diana’s essence and storytelling power. The “Caring Dress,” in particular, holds a special place in Plant’s heart as it epitomises Diana’s kindness and connects deeply with the museum’s mission. As Plant reminisced about her encounter with Diana 37 years ago, she expressed how the dress resonated with the qualities that define Diana’s enduring legacy, making it a pivotal addition to the museum’s collection.
Looking ahead, Plant and Sanchez plan to curate a travelling exhibit featuring their extensive collection of Princess Diana artifacts, with an inaugural showcase scheduled at the Bowers Museum in Santa Ana, California, in November. Their vision includes taking the exhibit to the UK to establish a permanent space that honours Diana’s memory for generations to come. By reuniting Diana’s accessories with her outfits, Plant aims to weave a comprehensive narrative that showcases the depth and significance of Diana’s impact on both fashion and philanthropy.
The auction not only highlighted Plant’s dedication to preserving Diana’s legacy but also underscored the enduring global fascination with the Princess of Wales. Princess Diana’s legacy continues to captivate audiences worldwide, with museums recognising the immense public interest in her story and contributions. A portion of the auction proceeds was directed towards Muscular Dystrophy UK, reflecting Diana’s enduring charitable impact and the ongoing relevance of her philanthropic initiatives.
Princess Diana’s profound influence, both as a style icon and a humanitarian figure, remains undiminished nearly three decades after her tragic passing. As museums and collectors around the world strive to commemorate her legacy, the enduring appeal of Princess Diana’s story serves as a testament to her enduring impact on society. Plant’s unwavering commitment to preserving Diana’s fashion legacy through the Princess Diana Museum stands as a poignant tribute to the People’s Princess, ensuring that her memory continues to inspire and resonate with audiences across generations.
