King Philippe and Queen Mathilde of Belgium are facing an unexpected delay in their return from Chile due to flight issues. The royal couple, who were on a state visit to the Republic of Chile, were scheduled to fly back home on Thursday, June 26. However, a problem with their aircraft has left them stranded in Chile.

The Belgian royals were set to depart from Antofagasta Airport on Thursday at 5 p.m. local time. Unfortunately, as they were preparing for take-off, a tire incident occurred, causing a delay in their travel plans. The aircraft, an Airbus A340-300 operated by Hi Fly, experienced technical difficulties, leading to the need for a tire replacement.

Following the tire replacement, the flight required official clearance to depart, further prolonging the delay for King Philippe and Queen Mathilde. The royal couple, along with their delegation, had to disembark the aircraft and move to a nearby hotel while waiting for the necessary approvals.
Despite efforts to rectify the issue, the repaired tire had not been officially approved for over 16 hours, preventing the King and Queen from returning home as planned. This travel setback marks the second incident during their visit to Chile, with the initial delay caused by technical problems with the outbound flight.
The state visit, which commenced on Monday, June 23, was shortened by a day due to difficulties with the aircraft. Despite the challenges faced during their trip, King Philippe and Queen Mathilde remained dedicated to their diplomatic engagements in Chile, focusing on various aspects of cooperation between the two countries.
The Belgian royal couple’s visit included a welcome ceremony in Santiago with President Gabriel Boric, highlighting the importance of strengthening bilateral ties. Despite the unexpected hurdles, King Philippe and Queen Mathilde endeavoured to fulfil their official duties and engage with the Chilean authorities during their stay.
As the King and Queen of Belgium navigate the challenges of their extended stay in Chile, their commitment to fulfilling their responsibilities and representing their country remains unwavering. The travel ordeal serves as a reminder of the unpredictability that can accompany official state visits, showcasing the resilience and adaptability of royal figures in the face of adversity.
In conclusion, the unexpected flight delay faced by King Philippe and Queen Mathilde during their visit to Chile underscores the realities of international travel, even for royalty. Despite the setbacks, the Belgian royal couple’s dedication to their diplomatic mission prevails, reflecting their steadfast commitment to representing Belgium on the global stage.
