A lifeguard in New Jersey, aged 18, has bravely spoken out about the terrifying ordeal she faced when she was impaled by a beach umbrella recently. The incident occurred at Asbury Park’s 3rd Avenue Beach when a strong gust of wind caused the umbrella to topple, with the pole narrowly missing a major artery in the lifeguard’s body by just a centimeter. The victim, known as Alex, recounted that she was attempting to secure the umbrella when it suddenly blew away, causing her to land directly on the pole.

Her boss, Joe Bongiovanni, who oversees the lifeguard and surf patrol program in Asbury Park, revealed that the pole was only two inches away from piercing right through her. He described the harrowing moment when the wind knocked both the lifeguard and the umbrella down, leading to the impalement. Thankfully, several fellow lifeguards rushed to assist Alex, and emergency responders quickly intervened to carefully remove the umbrella using a saw, preventing further harm.

Alex, a second-year lifeguard, detailed the experience, admitting that while she initially felt frightened, she found solace in the support of her coworkers. Remarkably, despite the close call, the umbrella managed to avoid touching any bones, narrowly avoiding a far more tragic outcome. She has since undergone surgery and received stitches, with doctors confirming that there was no significant internal damage. Alex expressed gratitude that the situation wasn’t worse, acknowledging her luck in narrowly escaping a potentially fatal injury.

Reflecting on the incident, Bongiovanni emphasised the seriousness of the situation, highlighting the fine line between the lifeguard’s fortune and misfortune. He explained that if the umbrella had shifted slightly in its trajectory, the outcome could have been catastrophic. Alex, who hails from Robbinsville, faces a recovery period of six to eight weeks, during which she will be unable to work. Despite her disappointment at being sidelined, she remains optimistic and appreciative of the fact that she survived such a life-threatening accident.
In response to the traumatic event, counselling has been made available to all members of the lifeguard team in Asbury Park, recognising the emotional toll such incidents can take on individuals within the close-knit community. Bongiovanni praised the resilience and dedication of his team, highlighting the challenges they face in their line of work, despite extensive training and preparation. The support offered to Alex and her colleagues underscores the importance of mental health and wellbeing in professions where risks and emergencies are an intrinsic part of the job.
The heart-wrenching account of Alex’s narrow escape serves as a poignant reminder of the dangers that lifeguards and emergency responders encounter daily in their efforts to safeguard public safety. The swift and coordinated response to the beach umbrella incident underscores the critical role of teamwork and preparedness in averting potential tragedies. As Alex continues her recovery journey, her courage and fortitude in the face of adversity stand as a testament to the resilience and spirit of those who dedicate their lives to protecting others in times of crisis.
