A Boston University soccer player has come forward with allegations of sexual harassment against former assistant coach Casey Brown, adding another layer to the controversy surrounding the BU women’s soccer team. The accusations against Brown surfaced after Call Her Daddy podcast host Alex Cooper accused the team’s former head coach, Nancy Feldman, of sexual harassment in a Hulu docuseries. According to The Boston Globe, Shayla Brown contacted BU’s confidential ethics hotline in September 2024 to report that Casey Brown was allegedly acting inappropriately towards a key player on the team. The player felt uncomfortable with the coach’s behaviour, describing it as manipulative and distressing. Subsequently, Shayla and 17 other players brought similar claims to BU’s Equal Opportunity Office, shedding light on a pattern of alleged misconduct by the assistant coach.

The key player, who chose to remain anonymous, recounted a prolonged period of unwanted attention and discomfort at the hands of Casey Brown. The reported behaviour included incessant text messages, unsettling invitations, and what was perceived as excessive focus on the player. Despite the allegations, BU stated that their investigation found no policy violations or evidence of sexual harassment. However, Casey Brown chose to resign from her position following the inquiry.
Alex Cooper, who had previously accused Nancy Feldman of sexual assault, also shared her experiences with Casey Brown during her time on the team. In a statement to The Globe, Brown denied the allegations made by Cooper, asserting that she had no recollection of the events described. She emphasised her commitment to supporting and protecting her players, refuting any suggestion of negligence on her part.
The turmoil within the BU women’s soccer team has drawn attention to the broader issue of sexual harassment in sports, prompting discussions about accountability and player safety. The courage of players like Shayla Brown in speaking out against inappropriate conduct exemplifies the importance of creating a safe and respectful environment within athletic programmes. It remains to be seen how BU and other institutions will address these allegations and work towards preventing similar incidents in the future.
The allegations against Casey Brown and Nancy Feldman have reverberated beyond the BU campus, sparking conversations about power dynamics and accountability in sports coaching. As the investigation unfolds and more details come to light, it is crucial for institutions and governing bodies to take proactive measures to safeguard the well-being of athletes and ensure that coaches adhere to the highest standards of conduct. The voices of those affected by misconduct must be heard and respected, and appropriate actions should be taken to address any instances of harassment or abuse.
In the wake of these allegations, the BU women’s soccer team and the university as a whole are facing scrutiny regarding their handling of the situation. The accountability of coaches and administrators in fostering a positive and inclusive team culture is paramount, and it is essential for institutions to prioritise the safety and well-being of their student-athletes. By shining a light on these issues and holding individuals accountable for their actions, we can work towards creating a sports environment that is free from harassment and misconduct.
