Karmelo Anthony, a high school student, was charged with first-degree murder after allegedly stabbing fellow student Austin Metcalf, leading to Metcalf’s tragic death. The incident occurred during a high school track meet at Kuykendall Stadium in Frisco, Texas, in April 2025. According to reports, the altercation started when Metcalf requested Anthony to move out of a tent he was sitting under. The situation escalated as Anthony allegedly warned Metcalf by saying, “Touch me and see what happens.” Eyewitnesses claim that Metcalf then moved towards Anthony, who responded by stabbing him in the chest with a knife from his bag. Despite being rushed to the hospital, Metcalf succumbed to his injuries.

Both Anthony and Metcalf were 17 years old at the time of the incident. A probable cause affidavit revealed that Anthony admitted to the crime by telling officers, “I did it.” However, he maintained that he was acting in self-defense. As a result, Anthony was formally indicted by a grand jury for first-degree murder on June 24, 2025. While the court schedule is pending, Anthony is out on bond awaiting trial.
The Collin District Attorney Greg Willis described Metcalf’s death as a “violent loss” and emphasized the seriousness of the case. Anthony will be tried as an adult due to the Texas criminal justice system’s handling of 17-year-olds as adults. Willis stressed the importance of seeking justice through a principled and steady legal process. Metcalf’s family expressed their belief in the justice system and awaited the trial while acknowledging that nothing could bring their son back.
Anthony, along with his family and legal team, has consistently maintained that he acted in self-defense. His attorneys reiterated his stance, emphasizing his right to defend himself when fearing for his life. Supporters of Anthony launched a fundraiser to cover legal expenses and other necessities, garnering significant community support. Meanwhile, Metcalf’s family remembered him fondly, highlighting his achievements and impact on those around him.
In the aftermath of the tragic incident, Metcalf’s family has faced challenges, including inappropriate responses from certain groups and restrictions on Anthony’s involvement in school events. Despite the heartache, they remain focused on commemorating Metcalf’s life and seeking closure through the investigation process. Jeff Metcalf, Austin’s father, shared heartfelt messages expressing gratitude for the outpouring of support and the impact his son had on those who knew him.
As legal proceedings unfold and the community grapples with the aftermath of this shocking event, both families seek closure and justice. The case serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of violence and the importance of upholding the principles of the justice system. As the trial progresses, the community watches closely, hoping for a fair and just resolution for all those involved.
