A recent devastating incident at Banff National Park in Canada has left two friends in shock, with one losing their life in a rockslide tragedy. Hamza Benhilal, a 33-year-old man, along with his friend Khaled El Gamal, 28, were exploring the Bow Glacier Falls hiking trail in the national park in Calgary when tragedy struck on Thursday, June 19. The serene atmosphere was shattered around 1:30 p.m. when a side of the cliff collapsed, leading to a fatal rockslide. Benhilal, originally from Morocco, bravely warned El Gamal, who hails from Egypt, to flee, but sadly, he succumbed to the forces of nature.
El Gamal shared his harrowing experience, recounting the horrifying moments leading up to the rockslide. Initially hearing a loud sound resembling a thunderstorm, he turned to witness a massive boulder tumbling down the mountain, shattering into fragments. Paralyzed with fear, El Gamal credits Benhilal’s quick thinking and decisive action for saving his life. Benhilal’s urgent cries to run snapped El Gamal out of his daze, propelling him to escape the impending danger. The friend’s swift reaction and sacrifice did not go unnoticed, as El Gamal expressed, “He saved me by screaming.”

In the chaos that ensued, El Gamal managed to outrun the cascading rocks but tragically lost sight of Benhilal in the process. He found himself on the receiving end of the rockslide’s wrath, sustaining non-critical injuries including fractures to his scapula and pelvis, as well as various cuts and tears across his body. Despite his own pain and disorientation, El Gamal mustered the strength to seek help for his missing friend, only to discover the heartbreaking truth that Benhilal had not survived the ordeal.

The aftermath of the rockslide also claimed the life of retired university professor Jutta Hinrichs, 70, and left two others injured. El Gamal expressed gratitude towards fellow hikers who selflessly remained by his side during the search for Benhilal, acknowledging their unwavering support amidst the tragedy. The emotional toll of the incident weighs heavily on all those involved, with El Gamal describing the haunting memories that continue to linger.
With emotions running high, El Gamal fondly remembered Benhilal as a mentor and a guiding presence in his life, noting his wisdom and generosity. Describing the deceased as a “big brother,” El Gamal highlighted Benhilal’s compassionate nature and willingness to offer counsel in times of need. As plans are made to honour Benhilal and support his family through this difficult time, the community remains deeply affected by the loss of a beloved friend and companion.
As the details of this tragic event continue to unfold, the resilience and camaraderie displayed by those impacted serve as a testament to the enduring spirit of human compassion in the face of adversity. The indelible bond shared between Benhilal and El Gamal, forged through shared experiences and unwavering support, stands as a poignant reminder of the profound impact of genuine friendship. In the wake of this heartbreaking incident, the community comes together to mourn the loss of a cherished individual while finding solace in the strength drawn from unity and mutual support.
