A courageous 9-year-old girl, Leah Lendel, has recently been discharged from the hospital, merely eight days after surviving a suspected shark attack that inflicted severe damage to her hand. The incident occurred while Leah was snorkelling with her family, and she suddenly let out a scream that alerted her mother to a large wound on her hand. Recalling the harrowing experience, Leah shared during a press conference on Thursday, June 19, “Something hard bit me, and then it tried to tug me away.”

Opening up about her recovery journey, Leah vividly described the moment of the attack, stating, “I was just snorkeling, and then I went up to breathe. And then something hard bit me, and then it tried to tug me away,” she continued, “Then I picked up my hand, and it’s all in blood.” The sight that greeted her mother, Nadia, was equally distressing as she saw her daughter’s hand “almost completely gone” with the surrounding water tainted with blood, leading her to realise that it was indeed a shark attack.

Prompt response from the Boca Grande County Fire Department, Lee County Sheriff’s Department, and emergency services was crucial in attending to Leah’s injuries, especially since nearby construction workers also rushed to provide assistance to the shocked family. Alfonso Tello, an eyewitness at the scene, detailed that he spotted what appeared to be an 8-foot-long shark as he entered the water to help. Following the traumatic encounter, Leah was swiftly airlifted to a nearby hospital for urgent medical intervention, undergoing a six-hour emergency surgery to address the extensive damage to her hand.

With a mix of relief and gratitude, Nadia informed Gulf Coast News the next day that skilled doctors were successful in reconstructing Leah’s hand, resorting to using arteries from her leg to restore blood flow and installing pins to support the bones. Despite the severity of the situation, Nadia expressed her gratitude that Leah retained the ability to move her fingers post-surgery. Boca Grande Fire Chief, C.W. Blosser, noted that this distressing incident marked the first shark bite on the island in approximately two decades, emphasising the rarity of such occurrences in the region.
