In a groundbreaking move, the upcoming season of the popular survival show Naked and Afraid will feature its first double amputee contestant. The season will kick off on March 9th, showcasing Mandy as she takes on the ultimate challenge of survival. In an exclusive clip released by PEOPLE, Mandy shares her inspiring journey, stating, “Ten years ago, my life was changed forever. I have died three times and came back from that.”

Mandy’s incredible story began after a tragic accident that resulted in the loss of both her legs. Despite this life-changing event, Mandy defied the odds by becoming the first female bilateral amputee to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. Now, she is ready to prove that there is life after facing the unimaginable. Her motto, as she eloquently puts it in the clip, is “tell me that I can’t and I will show you that I can.”
On Naked and Afraid, Mandy will be pushed to her limits as she attempts to survive in the remote jungle and dense rainforest of Belize for 21 days. This challenge, which she describes as her “Everest,” will see her and her partner Johnny facing intense conditions including heavy rains, swarms of mosquitos, and scarce resources such as food and water.
The show follows a unique format where two survivalists – one male and one female – are paired together to tackle the extreme challenge of enduring without food, water, or clothing, with only one personal item each. Mandy’s resilience and determination will be put to the test as she navigates the rugged terrain alongside her partner Johnny.
In a previous season, Shanika Malcom made history as the first Black female to survive 21 days in the Chiapas rainforest. Reflecting on her achievement, Malcom expressed the significance of being an inspiration for others, especially young girls. The show has been a platform for contestants like Malcom to showcase their strength and perseverance in the face of adversity.
The Naked and Afraid franchise continues to push boundaries and introduce new elements to keep viewers engaged. In 2023, the show launched Naked and Afraid: Last One Standing, where all-star contestants compete for a cash prize. The diverse representation on the show highlights the importance of inclusivity and providing opportunities for underrepresented voices in the survival world.
As Naked and Afraid prepares for its upcoming season featuring Mandy as the trailblazing double amputee contestant, audiences can expect a compelling and inspiring journey of resilience, courage, and determination. The show’s ability to challenge societal norms and showcase individuals overcoming extraordinary obstacles is a testament to the human spirit’s indomitable nature. Don’t miss the premiere of Naked and Afraid on Sunday, March 9th, at 8 p.m. ET on the Discovery Channel, followed by streaming options on Max and Discovery+.
