A nurse in Florida is facing charges of child neglect after being accused of starving a child with severe medical conditions to the point of liver failure. Kelly Rita Perrigo, aged 62, was arrested by police on Wednesday, Feb. 5, following a report filed by a woman from Cape Coral, Fla., in September, as confirmed by the Cape Coral Police Department.

The mother of the child, whose identity has not been disclosed, claimed that Perrigo, who was responsible for the child’s around-the-clock care, was neglecting to feed the child despite claiming to do so. Surveillance footage from the home showed Perrigo allegedly discarding the food rather than giving it to the child as she had reported. This incident occurred on Sept. 14, with the mother stating that Perrigo had not fed the child since Aug. 17, almost a month earlier.
The child, whose age has not been specified, reportedly suffered from severe health complications, including liver failure, and exhibited signs of fatigue and weight loss following Perrigo’s care since February of the previous year. Perrigo is said to have been one of the nurses working 12-hour shifts to look after the child.
The arrest of Perrigo comes after she was charged with felony child neglect, with authorities stating that she was released on a $50,000 bond, according to records from Lee County Jail. Online court records have not yet displayed any plea or attorney information regarding the case at this point in time.
It is crucial to highlight the impacts of child neglect and abuse cases like this one as they shed light on the vulnerability of children with severe medical conditions who rely on proper care and attention. Bringing such cases to justice is essential in ensuring the safety and well-being of all children in society.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the duty of care that healthcare professionals owe to their patients, especially vulnerable children who are unable to advocate for themselves. The allegations against Perrigo underscore the importance of thorough background checks and ongoing monitoring of healthcare providers to prevent such cases of neglect in the future.
Cases of child neglect and abuse are not only heartbreaking but also raise questions about the oversight and accountability measures in place within the healthcare system. The reported health complications and suffering experienced by the child in this case are a tragic outcome of alleged negligence, emphasising the need for stringent protocols and monitoring to safeguard vulnerable individuals under medical care.
The legal proceedings surrounding Perrigo’s case will be closely monitored as authorities work to ensure that justice is served and that steps are taken to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future. It is essential for communities to remain vigilant and proactive in reporting any suspicions of child neglect or abuse to protect those who may be in vulnerable situations.
As the investigation into this case progresses, it is crucial for authorities and healthcare institutions to conduct thorough reviews of their protocols and procedures to prevent such incidents from happening again. The well-being and safety of vulnerable individuals, especially children with severe medical conditions, must be prioritised and safeguarded at all times.
In conclusion, the arrest of Perrigo highlights the importance of upholding the highest standards of care and accountability in the healthcare profession to protect those who are most in need of support and protection. The ongoing legal proceedings will hopefully bring justice to the child affected in this case and serve as a reminder of the duty of care that all healthcare professionals must uphold in their practice.
