A California dentist, Dr. Ryan Watkins, who administered anesthesia to a 9-year-old girl before her untimely death, had a history of previous disciplinary action, according to documents. Silvanna Moreno tragically passed away on March 18, just hours after undergoing surgery at Dreamtime Dentistry in Vista, California, based on a report from the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office.
The autopsy report revealed that Silvanna died due to methemoglobinemia, which occurred after receiving nitrous oxide. The incident was deemed accidental. Dr. Watkins, who is trained in anesthesiology and treated Silvanna, stated that there were no indications of methemoglobinemia during the procedure or recovery period.
Despite treating numerous patients at Dreamtime Dentistry, it was not the first time Dr. Watkins faced a serious complication under his care. In 2020, disciplinary action was taken following an incident in 2016 where a 54-year-old man’s heart stopped during a dental procedure while under Dr. Watkins’ anesthesia. The patient, referred to as “MK,” suffered injuries and developed a neurocognitive disorder as a result.
The Dental Board of California placed Dr. Ryan Watkins on probation for 35 months, with specific conditions and oversight requirements, after the 2016 incident. The dentist was also directed to cover investigative and prosecution costs amounting to over $19,000. The probation allowed him to continue practising, provided he adhered to the stipulated terms.
