In a devastating turn of events, a skier lost his life after triggering an avalanche while descending a mountain peak in Alaska. The incident took place in Denali National Park and Preserve, where Washington resident, Nicholas Vizzini, 29, met with a fatal accident on Tuesday, June 10. This unfortunate event marks the second fatality on Mount McKinley this climbing season.

According to reports from the National Park Service, Vizzini and his climbing partner, a snowboarder, inadvertently triggered a soft slab avalanche as they were making their way down a slope. The avalanche, which occurred around 6:15 p.m. local time, led to Vizzini being caught in the snow slide. Despite efforts from mountaineering rangers to locate and rescue him, Vizzini succumbed to his injuries.

The top part of the avalanche released at approximately 16,600 feet, cascading down to about 15,000 feet. Following the tragic incident, Vizzini’s body was recovered from the debris and flown to Talkeetna, where it was then transferred to the Alaska state medical examiner for further examination.

The National Park Service revealed that Vizzini’s climbing partner, who sustained minor injuries during the avalanche, was set to be airlifted from the mountain the following day. The loss of Vizzini on Mount McKinley adds to the perilous nature of the terrain, with the park estimating around 13 avalanche-related deaths and over 130 total fatalities in its history.

The climbing community on Mount McKinley, which currently hosts about 500 climbers, has been left reeling from this tragic event. The climbing season, which typically runs from early May to early June, has seen its fair share of challenges this year with multiple accidents.
