Sherri Papini has recently spoken out against the portrayal of her mother, Loretta Graeff, in a new HBO docuseries, claiming that a quote featuring her mother was taken “wildly out of context.” The quote in question, “It was not an abduction,” seemed to suggest that Graeff doubted her daughter’s claims of being kidnapped back in 2016. However, Papini insists that her mother believes she was indeed abducted, despite the misleading impression created by the documentary.

During an episode of The Viall Files podcast, Papini expressed her frustration at how her mother’s words were edited and presented, leading to a misunderstanding. She clarified that her mother “definitely knows” that she was held captive and kidnapped, emphasizing that the quote did not accurately reflect her mother’s beliefs. According to Papini, the initial confusion surrounding the events was eventually cleared up, and her mother came to understand the truth of what had happened, which was not fully captured in the documentary.

The HBO docuseries, titled The Curious Case of Sherri Papini, revisited the widely publicized case where Papini disappeared while jogging near her home in Redding, California. She reappeared 22 days later, claiming to have been abducted by two masked Hispanic women. However, the story unravelled in 2022 when it was revealed that Papini had orchestrated her disappearance and was charged with mail fraud and making false statements. Despite her guilty plea, Papini maintains that her abduction was not a hoax, but rather she misled authorities about the identity of her captor out of fear.

In various interviews, including those for the HBO project and her podcast appearance, Papini has sought to present herself as a victim of misrepresentation by the media and legal authorities. She alleges that crucial evidence, such as interrogation audio, was omitted from the final documentary, painting a skewed picture of her involvement in the case. Additionally, Papini claims that her ex-boyfriend, with whom she had an emotional affair leading up to the incident, was not charged and played a significant role in the events that unfolded.
Describing the HBO series as a “trial by media,” Papini underscores the ongoing judgment and scrutiny she faces, despite serving time in prison and being under supervised release. She hopes that her mother will have the opportunity to publicly clarify her stance on the matter to set the record straight. While Papini continues to defend her version of events and maintains that she did not deceive authorities intentionally, public perception remains divided, with many finding discrepancies between her accounts and the unfolding revelations in the case.
