A tragic incident occurred as a small plane crashed into the waters off the coast of San Diego, resulting in the deaths of six individuals, including a pilot and his wife. The unsettling event took place on June 8 when a Cessna 414 went down in the Pacific Ocean near San Diego around 12:30 p.m. local time, as reported by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in a statement obtained by PEOPLE. The aircraft had departed from San Diego International Airport, en route to Phoenix, Arizona, according to Flightaware. The FAA’s preliminary report indicated the crash transpired “under unknown circumstances,” leading to the unfortunate loss of all six passengers.

Subsequent attempts to gather more details from the FAA were redirected to local authorities who are yet to provide additional insight into the incident. Following the crash, the United States Coast Guard swiftly mobilised in collaboration with other agencies to initiate a search and rescue operation for six individuals after the plane went down approximately three miles west of Point Loma, submerged in waters approximately 200 feet deep.
In the aftermath of the tragic crash, a family member identified the pilot as Landon Baldwin, hailing from Pima, Arizona, and his wife Torrie. Reports from Fox affiliate KSAZ and NBC affiliate KNSD revealed that the couple, both in their twenties, left behind two young children. Another group on board the ill-fated flight comprised a father and his three adult sons, also from Arizona. Landon’s relative, Kristen Baldwin, expressed profound shock at the devastating news, struggling to come to terms with the tragedy that befell the beloved couple.
Details emerged that moments before the crash, Landon had communicated to air traffic controllers about difficulties in ascending, reporting a mere altitude of 1,000 feet and receiving instructions to climb to 4,000 feet. Despite these efforts, the pilot faced challenges in locating the U.S. naval airport on Coronado Island, where controllers directed him to land. Subsequently, amidst escalating distress, Landon issued repeated Mayday calls before the communication abruptly ceased.
An eyewitness, Tyson Wislofsky, recounted his observations, initially mistaking the plane’s manoeuvres for aerial acrobatics until its sudden descent towards the water. The plane disappeared beneath the waves, leaving a deafening silence in its wake, indicating a high-velocity impact. The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) have initiated investigations into the crash, striving to unravel the sequence of events that led to this fatal outcome.
The tragedy serves as a sombre reminder of the inherent risks associated with air travel and the unpredictability of unfortunate mishaps that can occur even under the most diligent precautions. As investigations progress, the community mourns the loss of six precious lives, offering condolences and support to the grieving families dealing with the aftermath of this harrowing incident. People worldwide are reminded of the fleeting nature of life and the importance of cherishing every moment with loved ones. The aviation authorities endeavour to ascertain the causes behind the crash, aiming to enhance safety measures and prevent similar tragedies in the future.
