Over 19,000 cases of Dr Pepper have been recalled for containing sugar in cans marked as ‘Zero Sugar’. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced that the Dr Pepper Zero Sugar cans actually contained full-sugar soda, leading to potential health risks for consumers. This voluntary recall, initiated on May 23, affects 12-pack and 24-pack cases of the 12-ounce aluminum cans labelled as “Dr Pepper Zero Sugar”. Despite the misleading label, the drinks inside were found to contain about 39 grams of sugar per can, which can be harmful to individuals with diabetes or those who need to limit their sugar intake.

The FDA officially classified the recall as Class II on Thursday, June 5, indicating that the product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences. Although the likelihood of severe health impacts is low, there is still a risk. The affected cans were distributed in Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina and were produced by Pepsi Beverages Company in Jacksonville, Florida, under a license from CB Manufacturing Company, Inc. Consumers can identify the recalled cases by checking the product code listed as XXXXRS05165 and the “best by” date of Feb. 16, 2026.

It’s important to note that no other Dr Pepper products or batches of Dr Pepper Zero Sugar are part of the recall. While the FDA did not provide specific guidance on next steps for consumers, most stores should accept returns of the recalled items. Alternatively, consumers can choose to dispose of the cans or consume them if they do not need to avoid sugar. Dr Pepper is just one of the many brands that have had products recalled recently. For instance, earlier this month, 1.7 million eggs from the August Egg Company were recalled in nine states due to salmonella contamination.
In a statement shared with the FDA, the August Egg Company mentioned the importance of conducting the voluntary recall out of caution as contaminated eggs may still be in consumers’ homes. They emphasized the immediate steps taken to prevent any health risks associated with the contamination. For customers who have purchased the affected eggs, the brand encourages them to return the products to the place of purchase for a full refund or to discard them.
These recalls highlight the importance of food safety regulations and the need for companies to ensure the accuracy of their product labelling to protect consumers from potential health hazards. It is crucial for consumers to stay informed about product recalls and take appropriate actions if they have purchased any recalled items.
