A 17-year-old teenager named Zain Shah had a terrifying encounter during a recent fishing trip in the North Carolina wilderness. The young man, who was out on an end-of-high school adventure with a friend, suddenly felt a prick near his foot. Little did he know, this innocuous sensation was the bite of a rattlesnake lurking nearby. As the realisation set in, Zain found himself faced with a life-threatening situation.

As reported by North Carolina Emergency Management (NCEM), emergency services were brought in to rescue a hiker who had been bitten by a snake in Avery County. Zain shared his harrowing experience, recalling how the snake bite occurred around 5 p.m. while they were by Lost Cove Creek. The peaceful fishing trip took a dangerous turn when he inadvertently crossed paths with a timber rattlesnake deep in the woods.


The unfolding of events was described by Zain, who recounted that they were about to head back when he suddenly felt the unsettling prick near his foot. Upon investigating, he discovered the rattlesnake in close proximity. The gravity of the situation became apparent as he noticed two red dots and blood emerging from the bite marks. Zain’s quick thinking and prompt action were crucial in the face of the potentially fatal snakebite.
Fortunately, amidst the remote wilderness, Zain and his friend managed to call for help while making their way back to safety. Emergency responders, including the National Guard and the North Carolina Helo-Aquatic Rescue Team (NCHART), swiftly mobilised to assist in the rescue operation. A dramatic two-hour rescue operation culminated in Zain being airlifted to Johnson City Medical Center in Tennessee, where he underwent treatment with 12 vials of antivenom.
Zain’s gratitude towards the dedicated crews who rescued him was evident as he acknowledged their vital role in saving his life. Despite the ordeal, the resilient teenager expressed his heartfelt appreciation, emphasising that their efforts were instrumental in his survival. With plans to graduate from Chapel Hill High School on June 14, Zain is now on the path to recovery, surrounded by the support of his family and the community.
