Tragic Incident Claims the Life of a 12-Year-Old Boy in Willow Springs Lake

In a heartbreaking turn of events, a 12-year-old boy named Asael Gonzalez-Guel has passed away after accidentally falling into Camp Bullfrog Lake in Willow Springs, Illinois. The incident occurred on Friday, June 6, while the young boy was accompanied by his 9-year-old brother, according to reports from local authorities.
Reports from NBC affiliate WMAQ-TV and FOX affiliate WFLD suggest that the brothers slipped into the water while at the lake. Fortunately, a group of individuals who were fishing nearby were able to rescue the younger brother from the water. However, the older child was unresponsive when he was retrieved from the lake by a dive team from the North Palos Fire Department and Water Rescue Team just before 7:45 p.m.
Tragically, despite efforts to save him, the 12-year-old boy was pronounced dead at Northwestern Medicine Palos Hospital around 8:30 p.m. on the same day. The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office has identified the victim as Neri Asael Gonzalez-Guel, and his cause of death has been determined as accidental drowning.
Camp Bullfrog Lake, where the incident took place, spans 16 acres and has a depth of about 9.9 feet, as per information from the Forest Preserves of Cook County’s website. Located in Willow Springs, a Chicago suburb approximately 20 miles from the city, the lake serves as a popular recreational spot for locals and visitors alike.
The Forest Preserves of Cook County were contacted for additional information but did not immediately respond to the request for comment. The community has been deeply affected by this tragedy, highlighting the importance of water safety, especially during recreational activities involving young children.
