NASA Astronaut Shares Breathtaking Video of Northern Lights from Space

A mesmerizing video capturing the Northern Lights from space has been shared by NASA astronaut, Col. Anne McClain. The footage was taken from the International Space Station (ISS), where Col. Anne McClain is currently on board the SpaceX Dragon spacecraft.
The video showcases the aurora borealis, more commonly known as the Northern Lights, as seen from the Cupola of the ISS. Col. McClain was captivated by the way the auroras illuminated the surroundings, including the Dragon spacecraft, and the graceful dance of satellites in the distance.
Describing her experience, Col. McClain expressed her fascination with the auroras creeping over the Earth’s atmosphere as they appeared on the horizon. She mentioned that witnessing auroras from Earth has now become a top priority on her bucket list, highlighting the beauty and allure of this natural phenomenon.
NASA astronaut Nichole “Vapor” Ayers, also stationed on the ISS, shared further insights on the recent solar activity leading to spectacular auroras. A forecast by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) indicated an increased likelihood of viewing the Northern Lights due to geomagnetic storms.
Geomagnetic storms result from disturbances in the Earth’s magnetosphere caused by interactions between solar winds and the space environment surrounding our planet. While these storms can produce stunning auroras, severe disturbances have the potential to disrupt navigation systems and affect power grids, fortunately, the recent storms have remained mild.
The Northern Lights exhibit a range of vibrant colors due to the interaction of space particles with specific gases in the atmosphere. Oxygen interacting with space particles generates green or red lights, while nitrogen produces blue or pink hues. These colours can blend to create purple and white hues, adding to the enchanting display of the auroras.
