An American tourist, 41-year-old Aaron Castranova, met a tragic end after consuming a hallucinogenic herbal tea during a spiritual retreat in Peru. This incident occurred on June 1 when Castranova, reportedly from Alabama, drank an ayahuasca brew at the La Casa de Guillermo ICONA hostel in Loreto, situated in the Peruvian Amazon rainforest, as per reports from various national outlets including Daily Mail, La Republica, and Infobae.

The consumption of the ayahuasca brew led to Castranova suffering from multiple organ failure, with complications such as pleural effusion (fluid around the lungs) and acute pancreatitis, revealed by the regional prosecutor’s forensic pathologist, Dr. Narciso López as cited by Infobae. The mix of medications that Castranova was on, along with the ingestion of ayahuasca, is reported to have resulted in severe adverse reactions.
Ayahuasca is a psychedelic concoction containing dimethyltryptamine (DMT), a natural chemical found in the leaves of the psychotria viridis plant. This substance is deemed illegal in the United States but has been utilised for centuries by indigenous communities in countries like Peru, Brazil, Colombia, and Ecuador for religious ceremonies and therapeutic purposes, according to the Alcohol and Drug Foundation.
Participating in a ritual in the indigenous community of Santa Maria de Ojeda, Castranova failed to disclose to the ceremony organisers that he was taking antibiotics prior to the ritual, as noted by the Daily Mail. Upon Castranova’s passing, authorities were promptly notified, and his body was transported by river to the port of Bellavista Nanay before being taken to the central morgue in Iquitos for the family or the U.S. Embassy to claim.
As of now, no family members have come forward to claim Castranova’s body or contacted Peruvian authorities regarding his demise. The U.S. Embassy is set to facilitate the repatriation of Castronova’s remains back to the United States. The embassy strongly advises U.S. citizens against consuming traditional hallucinogens like ayahuasca or kambo due to their known health risks, which can include nausea, vomiting, increased heart rate, and even fatality, as well as lasting effects such as psychosis and ongoing hallucinations.
In a grim turn of events, news of Castranova’s passing serves as a stark reminder of the precautions individuals should take when engaging in activities involving psychedelics, especially during spiritual retreats in foreign countries. The importance of understanding the substances being consumed and communicating any pre-existing health conditions to organisers cannot be overstated to prevent such tragedies from reoccurring.
It is imperative for travellers to exercise caution and inform themselves thoroughly before partaking in unfamiliar rituals or ceremonies, particularly those involving substances with potent effects like ayahuasca. The significance of safety and responsibility in such situations cannot be emphasised enough to avert unfortunate incidents like the untimely demise of Aaron Castranova.
