Texas Cheerleader Suffers Injury Due to Extreme Exercise: Lawsuit

A high school cheerleader in Texas has been caught in a controversy after allegedly being injured during excessive physical exercise used as punishment. The parents of the student have initiated a lawsuit against three teachers from Rockwall-Heath High School, accusing them of forcing their daughter to complete rigorous exercises which led to the cheerleader being diagnosed with exertional rhabdomyolysis.
The lawsuit filed by Robert and Misty Hanvey claims that the minor student, identified as “E.H.,” was subjected to extreme exercise by teachers Amanda Jones, Ryleigh Valladarez, and Kaley Stewart as a punishment. The Hanveys allege that their daughter was made to perform 50 modified burpees, including push-ups, against her doctor’s recommendation due to a note excusing her from physical activities while recovering from strep throat.
Witnesses stated that the student was visibly distressed during the exercises, with Coach Jones allegedly pushing her to continue despite her physical struggles. The cheerleader, described as a straight-A student aspiring to study nursing in college, participated in the punishment out of fear of losing her position on the squad, as the teachers reportedly used threats and intimidation to motivate the team members.
After experiencing arm pain and exhaustion following the exercises, the cheerleader sought medical attention. Tests revealed elevated creatine kinase levels, indicating muscle breakdown, leading to a diagnosis of rhabdomyolysis. Despite the severity of the situation, the Rockwall Board of Trustees allegedly dismissed the parents’ concerns, citing lack of evidence to support the claims and concerns over public funds.
This incident is not the first involving the use of exercise as punishment at Rockwell-Heath High School. In a previous case in 2023, a football coach faced similar accusations after students were hospitalized due to overexertion. The school district hired a law firm to investigate the matter, resulting in the coach resigning from his position.
The family’s attorney, Michael Sawicki, expressed shock at the repetition of such incidents and highlighted the need to learn from past mistakes to prevent future harm to students. Despite the ongoing legal battle and investigations, the school administration has yet to address the allegations raised by the parents of the cheerleader.
As the case unfolds, it sheds light on the importance of ensuring the well-being and safety of students in educational institutions. The impact of punitive measures involving physical exercise on young individuals must be carefully considered to prevent instances of harm or injury.
