A tragic incident unfolded in Utah as a snowmobiler lost his life in an avalanche. The victim, identified as 37-year-old Scott Wright from Evanston, Wyo, was buried in snow during the avalanche while enjoying a snowmobile ride in the Monte Cristo Snowmobile Area near the Rich County and Cache County Line. The avalanche incident happened on Monday, Feb. 3, as confirmed by the Rich County Sheriff’s Office.

Wright had been accompanied by a friend at the time of the accident. Unfortunately, his friend was unable to locate him after the avalanche, prompting a call for help. The Rich County Search and Rescue team, along with several other agencies, immediately responded to the scene around 3 p.m. local time to initiate the search and rescue operation.
The challenging terrain and deep snow made it a prolonged effort to locate Wright, with reports indicating that it took nearly four hours to find him around 6:30 p.m. The preliminary assessment from the Utah Avalanche Center revealed that Wright was caught, carried, and fully buried in a large hard slab avalanche during the tragic incident.

Dave Sparks of Sparks Heavy Rescue described the monumental task they faced during the search operation. He highlighted the significant size of the avalanche, stating that “there was slabs of snow that were five feet thick by 12 feet long — just monster slabs of snow.” The complexities of the recovery operation were further compounded by the avalanche descending into the trees, making the retrieval extremely intricate.
The use of helicopters and advanced equipment was instrumental in assisting with the challenging recovery process. Sparks mentioned the strategic deployment of a Black Hawk helicopter, underscoring its effectiveness in such demanding situations. The presence of such tools proved essential in navigating the logistical obstacles posed by the avalanche and the search efforts for the victim.

Nikki Champion, a forecaster at the Utah Avalanche Center, emphasised the importance of recognising the signs of unstable slopes to prevent such tragic incidents in the future. She highlighted the need for awareness regarding slope conditions and indicators like cracking or collapsing, which can signify potential instability.
The tragic loss of Scott Wright serves as a stark reminder of the unpredictable nature of avalanches and the dangers they pose to winter sports enthusiasts. The incident underscores the critical importance of exercising caution, staying informed about avalanche risks, and being prepared with the necessary safety measures while exploring the backcountry. Our thoughts are with the family and friends of Scott Wright during this difficult time.
