Equinox and SoulCycle customers in New York may soon receive refunds due to difficulties in canceling their memberships. On June 2, 2025, the New York Attorney General Letitia James announced a $600,000 settlement against the fitness company, alleging that Equinox, Equinox+, and SoulCycle had made it challenging for New Yorkers to cancel their memberships.

According to the Attorney General, Equinox Group failed to clearly disclose its subscription terms and did not provide consumers with the required subscription acknowledgment under New York law. Letitia James stated, “New Yorkers should be able to cancel a membership they no longer use or want without breaking a sweat.”
The settlement requires Equinox Group to pay $600,000 in penalties and revise its subscription practices. Additionally, the company must offer refunds to subscribers who attempted to cancel their memberships but faced obstacles. The complaints included complex and time-consuming cancellation processes due to hard-to-understand terms and conditions.
An Equinox and SoulCycle spokesperson mentioned that prior to the inquiry, changes had already been initiated to comply with statutory requirements. They expressed satisfaction with the resolution of the matter, indicating that policies are now in full compliance with the law.
The terms of the settlement dictate that eligible New York subscribers who experienced issues with cancellation between February 9, 2021, and December 31, 2024, may claim refunds of up to $250. To receive refunds, subscribers must email Equinox Group or SoulCycle by August 2, 2025, with specific details as required.
The settlement aims to address concerns raised by subscribers who found the cancellation process convoluted and time-intensive. By providing monetary restitution and improving transparency in their subscription terms, Equinox Group is taking steps to enhance customer satisfaction and compliance with consumer protection laws.
Individuals who first subscribed or attempted to cancel their memberships within the specified timeline are encouraged to reach out and claim their share of the settlement. This initiative highlights the importance of clear and accessible membership cancellation procedures for maintaining consumer trust and upholding legal standards in the fitness industry.
As the Equinox and SoulCycle refund programme gets underway, affected members can look forward to resolving past challenges with membership cancellations. The actions taken by the Attorney General and the fitness company signify a commitment to improving customer experience and ensuring transparency in business practices.
