A 35-year-old woman’s life was saved after suffering a stroke mid-flight while travelling from Turkey to Mexico. Maricela Hernandez Quezada was in critical condition when a doctor onboard realised the severity of her situation and urged the flight crew to make an emergency landing in Houston. Hernandez Quezada, who is reported to be healthy and a non-smoker or drinker, attributed her stroke to not moving during the long international flight. She highlighted how important it is for travellers to stay active and move around every two to three hours during long trips to prevent such medical emergencies. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the risks associated with prolonged periods of inactivity during travel, especially on long flights where blood clot formation can pose serious health threats.

The stroke left Hernandez Quezada partially paralyzed upon her arrival at Memorial Hermann. Dr. Haris Kamal, the Medical Director of the stroke program at the hospital, noted her condition upon admission, stating she was weak and experienced paralysis on her right arm and leg, in addition to speech comprehension difficulties. However, after undergoing emergency surgery to remove the brain clot, she has shown significant improvement and can now walk and talk. Her medical team remains optimistic about her recovery, expecting her to regain normal functionality in the coming months.

Medical professionals emphasise the importance of staying hydrated and mobile during flights to reduce the risk of blood clots and other health complications associated with extended periods of sitting. The incident involving Hernandez Quezada serves as a cautionary tale for travellers, highlighting the critical need to remain active and vigilant about one’s health, especially during long journeys. Regular movement and proper hydration are essential for minimising the risk of serious health issues while travelling, including stroke and blood clot formation.
Hernandez Quezada expressed gratitude towards the medical staff who provided her with life-saving treatment, acknowledging their crucial role in her recovery. She considers herself blessed to have received timely medical intervention and is now focused on her journey towards complete healing and wellness. Her experience underscores the importance of quick action and effective medical care in emergencies such as strokes, reinforcing the significance of preparedness and awareness while travelling.
Moving forward, Hernandez Quezada is determined to prioritise her health and well-being, recognising the significance of taking preventative measures to avoid similar health crises in the future. Her resilience and positive outlook reflect the strength and courage she exhibited throughout her medical ordeal, serving as an inspiration to others facing health challenges. By sharing her story, she highlights the importance of proactive health management and underscores the value of prioritising one’s health, especially during travel and in potentially high-risk situations.
In light of this incident, travellers are urged to heed the advice of medical experts and take proactive steps to safeguard their health during journeys, particularly on long flights. By adopting habits such as regular movement, hydration, and awareness of potential health risks associated with travel, individuals can reduce the likelihood of medical emergencies and enhance their overall well-being. Hernandez Quezada’s survival serves as a powerful testament to the importance of mindfulness and care when travelling, inspiring others to prioritise their health and safety in all circumstances.
