In a heartwrenching rescue operation, a severely emaciated Great Dane named Stella was saved from an alleged case of animal cruelty in Florida, leaving animal lovers and authorities shocked at the condition in which she was found.

Stella the Great Dane was discovered in a deplorable state on May 27, along with another dog, and was half the recommended weight for her size. She was crawling with fleas, visibly injured, and was in urgent need of care and attention.

The Polk County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO) intervened and gained custody of Stella and the other dog from their owner, Bradford Thomas, who was subsequently arrested and charged with animal cruelty for neglecting their well-being.

Upon examination, it was revealed that Stella was severely emaciated, had multiple abrasions and scabs, was covered in fleas, and was suffering from bumblefoot on all four paws. Her physical condition was alarming, with her weight estimated to be only around 60 lbs, which is half of what she should weigh at her age and size.

Authorities were appalled to discover that Stella’s owner, Bradford Thomas, had allegedly claimed that she was a “picky eater” and didn’t consume much food. However, after her rescue, deputies found that she eagerly consumed a substantial amount of food, disproving Thomas’s claims.

Deputy Jacob Durrance, who was involved in Stella’s rescue, debunked the notion that she was a picky eater by stating, “We fed her ourselves, and she was very grateful to eat. She ate a lot.” In just two days post-rescue, Stella gained 8 lbs due to a proper diet and hydration, illustrating her eagerness to recover.

Despite the progress in Stella’s condition following her rescue, she still has a long road to recovery ahead. Deputy Durrance expressed optimism about her prognosis and hopes that she will eventually be ready for adoption into a loving home.

Following the arrest of Bradford Thomas, the Public Utilities Director for the City of Auburndale, on charges of animal cruelty and aggravated animal cruelty, the Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd condemned his actions as unacceptable. The focus now is on providing the necessary care and attention to Stella, Bella, and their former owner.
