Former “Sex and the City” star, Kristin Davis, has recently opened up about the unrealistic beauty standards she faced while working on the hit TV show Melrose Place. In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE Magazine, the 59-year-old actress shared her experience of being told not to gain weight during her time on the popular drama series.

Davis made her breakthrough in 1995 when she landed the role of Brooke Armstrong on Melrose Place. Despite the show’s success and her fond memories of working with co-stars like Heather Locklear, Davis recalled the intense pressure to maintain a slim physique on set. She described a culture where “every single person was gorgeous and super skinny,” leading her to feel compelled to adhere to the same standards.
To meet these expectations, Davis went to extreme lengths, including hiring a running coach and attending back-to-back 90-minute spin classes. Reflecting on that period, she admitted, “I was frustrated. I was trying to do the thing. Of course, I’m sure I wasn’t eating, I have no idea. I don’t remember the eating part.”
The toll of these demands became evident when Davis experienced alarming health issues. She recounted a moment where she felt light-headed and actually fainted in a parking lot. The actress revealed that there were times when she struggled to even remember her own name, indicating the severe impact of the pressure to maintain a certain body image.
One particularly memorable incident occurred when Davis was approached by her co-star, Thomas Calabro, who shared concerns raised by the Melrose Place producers about her weight. Calabro expressed admiration for Davis’s curves, highlighting the contrasting views on body image within the industry.
Upon learning about the producers’ stance on her weight, Davis confronted them, only to be met with reassurances that she looked beautiful but was subtly cautioned against gaining weight. This experience resonated with Davis as she acknowledged that such practices were considered “normal” in the entertainment industry at that time.
Despite the challenges she faced, Davis has since found empowerment in sharing her story through her iHeartRadio podcast, “Are You a Charlotte?” where she delves into episodes of “Sex and the City.” By speaking out about her past struggles with body image and industry pressures, Davis is leading conversations on self-acceptance and challenging harmful beauty standards.
In an era where body positivity and inclusivity are gaining momentum, Davis’s candid revelations serve as a reminder of the importance of prioritising mental and physical well-being over unrealistic expectations. Her resilience and willingness to speak openly about her experiences shed light on the pervasive issue of body shaming in the entertainment world and inspire others to embrace their authentic selves.
As Davis continues to navigate her career with authenticity and grace, her story serves as a beacon of strength and an encouragement for individuals to embrace their uniqueness, regardless of societal pressures. Through her podcast and advocacy, she paves the way for a more inclusive and accepting industry where diversity in all its forms is celebrated and valued.
