Kansas Zoo Eagerly Awaits Summer Sightings of Flamingo Who Escaped 20 Years Ago and Joined a Wild Flock

The Sedgwick County Zoo in Kansas is eagerly anticipating summer sightings of a notorious escapee, a flamingo who made a daring getaway 20 years ago. The elusive bird, known as “Pink Floyd,” managed to break free from the zoo during a stormy night in 2005, sparking a saga that continues to captivate animal enthusiasts.

Pink Floyd, originally identified as flamingo No. 492 due to the numbered band around its leg, fled alongside another African flamingo out of the 39 birds imported from Africa to the Kansas zoo in 2004. Unfortunately, the zoo staff had not yet clipped their wings or determined their genders through blood testing, enabling the feathered fugitives to take flight with ease.

Despite efforts to capture the escaped flamingos, Pink Floyd has evaded recapture and has been spotted multiple times over the years, delighting observers with its resilience and adaptability in the wild. The other flamingo that absconded with Pink Floyd has not been sighted since the initial getaway in June 2005, leaving its fate shrouded in mystery.

Pink Floyd’s nomadic tendencies have led to sightings in various locations, including a notable appearance on the Texas Gulf Coast in May 2023, where it was documented mingling with other wild flamingos. While the bird’s exact whereabouts remain unpredictable, it seems to enjoy returning to familiar haunts, offering glimpses of its graceful presence to onlookers.

In 2024, a photographer from Corpus Christi claimed to have encountered Pink Floyd in Port Aransas, although the sighting was not officially confirmed due to the obstructed view of the identifying leg band in the photographs. Despite this, Pink Floyd’s adventures have extended beyond Texas, with reports placing the runaway bird in Wisconsin and Louisiana at different times.

Officials from the Sedgwick County Zoo have decided against attempting to re-capture Pink Floyd, opting to allow the flamingo to roam freely in its chosen habitats. The zoo’s spokesperson, Christan Baumer, underscored the importance of minimising disruptions to the local wildlife and preserving the bird’s autonomy, a sentiment echoed in their hands-off approach to the situation.
