UFC fighter Bryce Mitchell found himself in hot water after making controversial antisemitic and homophobic statements during a recent episode of his podcast, ArkanSanity. The 30-year-old athlete faced immediate backlash for praising Adolf Hitler and casting doubt on the reality of the Holocaust. In response to the criticism, Mitchell took to Instagram to address the issue and assert that he is “definitely not a Nazi”.
In his Instagram post on Saturday, Feb. 2, Mitchell expressed remorse for his remarks, acknowledging that they may have been insensitive and offensive. He recognised the atrocities of the Holocaust, stating, “I know that a lot of people died in the Holocaust, and that’s a fact. Hitler did a lot of evil things, I think we can all agree on that. I’m definitely not a Nazi, and definitely do not condone any of the evil things Hitler did.”

The initial controversy arose from Mitchell’s podcast episode with pro MMA fighter Roli Delgado, where Mitchell reportedly lauded Hitler as a “good guy” based on his personal research. These comments stirred anger among fans and drew sharp condemnation from UFC President and CEO Dana White, who labelled them as ignorant and abhorrent.

White made his disapproval clear, emphasising the significance of historical facts and the atrocities committed by Hitler. While condemning Mitchell’s remarks, White stated, “Hitler was one of the most disgusting and evil human beings to ever walk the face of the Earth. And anyone that even tries to take an opposing position is a moron.”
Despite the strong criticism from White, the UFC decided not to take disciplinary action against Mitchell, citing freedom of expression. While acknowledging the public outrage, White highlighted that the nature of the sports business allows for fans to witness consequences for such controversial statements through Mitchell’s fights being broadcast on a global scale.
With growing attention on the incident, Mitchell’s apology and clarification attempt to address the controversy surrounding his podcast comments. The fallout serves as a reminder of the responsibility that public figures, particularly athletes in the spotlight, have to be mindful of their words and the impact they can have on their audience.
The incident involving Mitchell underscores the importance of understanding the historical significance of sensitive topics like the Holocaust and the need for education and awareness to combat misinformation and hate speech. As the conversation continues, it highlights the role of sports organisations in addressing and responding to controversial statements made by their athletes.
In an era where social media can amplify voices and opinions, incidents like this serve as a reminder of the power of words and the accountability public figures hold. Mitchell’s case demonstrates the delicate balance between freedom of speech and the consequences of using that freedom irresponsibly in a public platform.
Moving forward, Mitchell’s actions and statements will likely be scrutinised more closely, showcasing the impact of his words beyond the octagon. The ongoing dialogue surrounding his controversial remarks serves as a lesson in the importance of promoting understanding, tolerance, and empathy in a diverse and interconnected world.
