Endangered Gorillas Rescued from Wildlife Trafficking and Set Free in the Wild

In a heartwarming turn of events, four critically endangered female eastern lowland gorillas have been successfully reintroduced into the wild after being rescued from the clutches of illegal wildlife traffickers. The amazing journey of these gorillas, named Isangi, Lulingu, Mapendo, and Ndjingala, culminated in their release into the wild world of Mt. Tshiaberimu in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

The journey of these four gorillas began in 2010 when they were first brought to the Gorilla Rehabilitation and Conservation Education Center (GRACE) in Kasuhgo, Eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo. Over the years, they found solace and care at the sanctuary, allowing them to socialize, climb, and play, preparing them for their eventual return to their natural habitat in the wild.

The decision to release the gorillas into the wild was not taken lightly. Extensive research and planning went into ensuring the success of their reintroduction, with conservation experts closely monitoring their progress. The ultimate goal was to help these gorillas heal from the trauma of their past experiences and provide them with a chance to thrive in their natural environment.

After years of rehabilitation and preparation, the four gorillas were deemed ready for their reintroduction to the wild. A multi-year rewilding process was initiated, culminating in their airlift from the GRACE sanctuary to Virunga National Park in October 2024. Here, the gorillas were moved to a special facility on Mt. Tshiaberimu, designed to ease their transition back into the wild.

The success of the reintroduction exceeded all expectations, as the gorillas quickly adapted to their new surroundings. Within just two months, the apes were seen interacting with wild gorillas native to Mt. Tshiaberimu, showcasing their resilience and readiness to embrace their new life in the wild. The conservationists were thrilled to see the gorillas thriving and integrating seamlessly into their natural habitat.

Dr. Eddy Kambale Syaluha, a veterinarian for Gorilla Doctors involved in the project, reported that the gorillas have shown remarkable health and resilience since their release into the wild. Their seamless transition and acceptance by the other gorillas in the area are a testament to the success of the rewilding project and the dedication of all those involved.
