‘Distressed’ Kangaroo Gets into ‘Boxing Match’ with Man, Then Tries to Drown Him in Floodwaters

A man in New South Wales, Australia, had a harrowing encounter with a distressed kangaroo during a recent heavy storm that led to multiple fatalities. The incident, which occurred on May 23, involved the kangaroo attempting to submerge the man in floodwaters. Witness Kristy Lees shared her account of the situation, revealing that she and her husband were on their way to assess water levels in Port Macquarie when they were warned about a large kangaroo in the vicinity.

As Lees and her husband approached the kangaroo near a parked vehicle, the animal unexpectedly attacked their car before turning its attention to the man, identified as Don James, who was walking along the road. According to Lees, a confrontation ensued between James and the kangaroo, with the two engaging in what she described as a “boxing match.” The situation escalated when James fell into a patch of floodwater, and the kangaroo attempted to hold him underwater, leading to a traumatic experience for James.

Fortunately, the kangaroo was spooked by an approaching vehicle driven by James’ friend, causing the animal to retreat and allowing James to escape. Lees noted that the kangaroo appeared distressed, possibly a result of being trapped during the recent flooding that impacted southeastern Australia, resulting in multiple casualties and leaving thousands stranded. Kangaroos, typically peaceful animals, can display aggression, especially during male-to-male combat, using their powerful arms and feet as weapons.

Despite the unusual and alarming nature of the incident, with Lees emphasizing that such encounters are rare even in Australia, where wildlife interactions are common, the man involved in the confrontation survived the ordeal.
