A man from Pennsylvania is facing murder charges after allegedly confessing to the killing of his girlfriend, citing fear of paranormal activity as the reason behind his actions. The victim, identified as 46-year-old Jane A. White, was discovered shot to death on a street in Northumberland County, Pa., on Jan. 3. Reports from The Daily Item, PennLive, and The News-Item detailed the incident, which led to the arrest of Jane’s boyfriend, 46-year-old Jared Wolfe, after his brother contacted authorities claiming Wolfe had admitted to shooting White.

During a hearing on Tuesday, Feb. 5, a judge declared that Wolfe would be tried for all seven charges laid against him, including first-degree murder. According to PennLive, Wolfe described to authorities that on the day of the tragedy, he and White had visited a friend’s residence where they had smoked marijuana. However, Wolfe later expressed uncertainty regarding the substance they had consumed. He recounted placing a “paranormal meter” near a statue, claiming an unnervingly high reading from the device startled him, leading him to believe that someone intended to harm him.
In a statement provided by Sunbury police officer Trey Kurtz in the affidavit, Wolfe stated his belief that Jane White and their friends were conspiring to kill and devour him, causing him to flee the house in a state of panic to retrieve his handgun from his vehicle. Wolfe then admitted to shooting White, resulting in her tragic demise due to a gunshot wound to the chest, as confirmed by the coroner’s report.
Jane White, remembered as an artist, photographer, and caregiver, left behind two children, according to the National Gun Violence Memorial. Tributes on her memorial page expressed sentiments of endearment and loss, with one message honouring her as an exceptional mother and individual, whose life was unfairly taken away. A second message simply conveyed unending love and remembrance for White.
Legal records reviewed by PEOPLE disclosed that Wolfe faces charges of first-degree murder, third-degree murder, and two counts of aggravated assault, amongst other offenses. Details on a plea entered by Wolfe were not available at the time of reporting, and his defence attorney had not responded to requests for comments.
