Jerry Trainor, widely known for his roles in popular Nickelodeon shows like Drake & Josh and iCarly, recently shared an intriguing story about how he secured his breakout role as ‘Crazy Steve’ on Drake & Josh. During a panel at Richmond Galaxy Con, Trainor revealed the unconventional path he took to impress the casting directors and ultimately win the role that kickstarted his career.
Despite having just graduated from college with a degree in theater, where he was taught to exercise restraint in his performances, Trainor had to go against his training to embody the character of Crazy Steve. When he auditioned for the role, it had already been cast, but the initial actor did not meet the expectations of the production team in terms of portraying the required level of craziness.
Trainor seized the opportunity during a last-minute audition, where he decided to go all out and showcase his versatility. He recalled, “And you have to understand, I had just gotten out of college, majoring in theater, where they’re telling me to, like, tone it down, bring it in, drop it in. Subtext, subtext, subtext.”
During the audition, Trainor unleashed a side of himself that surprised everyone in the room. He portrayed Crazy Steve’s explosive personality flawlessly, escalating his performance at the casting director’s request. Trainor’s willingness to push the boundaries paid off when he offered to go “nuclear” with the character, demonstrating his commitment to the role.
His portrayal of Crazy Steve was so impactful that the casting director immediately recognized his potential and urged him to go even bigger with his performance. Trainor’s ability to embody the character’s eccentricities led to him landing the role, which later became a recurring one on the show, alongside other Nickelodeon projects like iCarly.
In his subsequent role as Spencer Shay on iCarly, Trainor’s natural talent for comedic yelling continued to shine. Reflecting on his experience, he mentioned to Entertainment Weekly in 2012, “It’s definitely become second nature. But I was always what you’d call an ‘amplified person.'”
