“Lilo & Stitch” Stars Say ‘Organic Authenticity’ of the Film’s Hawaiian Representation Is ‘Important’ (Exclusive)

The Stars of Lilo & Stitch Praise Authenticity in Film’s Hawaiian Representation

The live-action remake of the beloved Disney film “Lilo & Stitch” has captured the hearts of audiences once again, this time immersing viewers in the stunning beauty of Hawaii. The original 2002 animated hit has been transformed into a live-action version set in Lilo’s homeland, Hawaii, and filmed on location. Tia Carrere, a native of Oahu who voiced Nani in the original, now plays a new character, Mrs. Kekoa, in the remake. Carrere emphasises the importance of authentically representing Hawaiian culture, stating, “It’s important because it’s the stuff that you feel when you’re there.”

Director Dean Fleischer Camp and Chris Sanders aimed for authentic representation in the film, a goal that Carrere fully embraced. She expresses her excitement about returning to the world of Lilo & Stitch, highlighting the discussions about incorporating ‘pidgin English’ into her character. The emphasis on ensuring that characters like Lilo, Nani, and their neighbours sound like locals was a priority for Carrere and the filmmakers.

Filmed on Oahu but set on Kauai, the new Lilo & Stitch production featured a cast and crew deeply rooted in Hawaiian culture. Native-born talents such as Maia Kealoha, Sydney Agudong, and Kaipo Dudoit took on significant roles, both in front of and behind the camera. The film also includes music from Mark Kealiʻi Hoʻomalu and The Kamehameha Schools Children’s Chorus, as well as songs from Elvis Presley and a new cover of “Burning Love” by Bruno Mars.

Sydney Agudong, one of the stars in the film, emphasises the importance of organic authenticity in storytelling set in Hawaii.
