Mikayla Matthews, a former star of ‘The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives’, has recently opened up about her challenging experience of becoming pregnant at the tender age of 16. In a candid interview on The Squeeze with Tay Lautner, the now 25-year-old Mikayla bravely discussed the traumatic impact her first pregnancy had on her due to the sexual abuse she endured as a child.

The young mother revealed that she had just met her now-husband, Jace Terry, a few weeks before discovering she was pregnant. Recalling those tumultuous times, Mikayla shared, “I think all that was traumatizing, but also it was so helpful being with someone like Jace because, again, he’s been so patient with me and he truly wants me to be the best version of myself.”
Despite finding solace in Jace as a “safe place” in her life, Mikayla disclosed that the early stages of their relationship were far from easy. She elaborated on how she had only known him for a short period before the unexpected pregnancy, leading to her dropping out of high school and isolating herself from friends.
In a moment of revelation, Mikayla shared how she found out about her pregnancy after passing out in a sauna and being rushed to the hospital by her mother. The news of her pregnancy brought a wave of mixed emotions and uncertainties, but she ultimately decided to keep the baby, with Jace standing by her side, supportive of her decision.
Reflecting on the lack of support from her inner circle, Mikayla expressed feelings of isolation and loneliness during that challenging period in her life. Even though she had not yet confided in her mother about the abuse she had endured, she found a sense of comfort in her presence as she navigated through the uncertainties of impending motherhood.
The couple welcomed their first child, Beckham, in 2017, followed by the arrival of their daughter, Haven, in August 2019 and a son, Tommie, in November 2021. Mikayla, who is currently expecting their fourth child, revealed that she struggled with facing her past traumas and only recently began addressing them in therapy.
Opening up about the impact her past abuse had on her intimate relationships, Mikayla candidly shared how she grappled with feelings of resentment and a deep-seated fear that led to challenges in her marriage. However, through therapy and open communication with Jace, she has been able to work through her triggers and build a deeper understanding between them.
As Mikayla continues her journey of healing and growth, she emphasised the importance of seeking support and sharing one’s struggles with trusted loved ones. Her story serves as a powerful reminder of the resilience and courage it takes to confront past trauma and move towards a brighter, more hopeful future.
In a world where teenage pregnancy and the long-term effects of childhood abuse are often stigmatised and misunderstood, Mikayla’s story sheds light on the complexities and challenges faced by young mothers in similar situations. Her bravery in sharing her journey inspires hope and underscores the importance of empathy and support for those navigating similar struggles.
