United Airlines Flight Makes Emergency Landing as ‘Technical Issue’ Causes Injuries

A United Airlines flight faced a harrowing ordeal as it had to turn back to Nigeria due to a technical issue that resulted in six people sustaining injuries. The incident occurred during United Airlines Flight 613’s journey from Lagos, Nigeria, to Washington D.C. on Friday, Jan. 24, prompting an emergency landing back in Lagos.
According to reports from USA Today Travel and CNN, the flight encountered “unexpected aircraft movement,” leading to the decision to return to Lagos for the safety of all onboard. Among the passengers and crew on the flight, four passengers and two flight attendants suffered minor injuries attributed to the incident. Thankfully, they received medical attention and have since been discharged from the hospital.
In a statement regarding the incident, United Airlines acknowledged the technical issue and the subsequent unexpected movement of the aircraft. The airline confirmed that the flight made a safe landing in Lagos and reiterated that passenger safety remains a top priority. Collaborating with aviation authorities in the U.S. and Nigeria, United Airlines is actively investigating the root cause of the incident to prevent such occurrences in the future.
The Airbus A340 aircraft, carrying 245 passengers, eight flight attendants, and three pilots, encountered the technical issue mid-flight, necessitating the return to Lagos. Footage from the flight shared on social media showcased the aftermath inside the cabin, with items and food cartons strewn across the aisle as a result of the incident.
Despite the alarming nature of the emergency landing, Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection at Nigeria’s Civil Aviation Authority, Michael Achimugu, confirmed that there were no fatalities. Following the landing, affected passengers were accommodated in hotels as the investigation into the technical issue commenced.
While United Airlines ruled out severe turbulence as a potential cause for the unexpected aircraft movement, a definitive reason for the incident is yet to be determined. This unfortunate event comes after the aircraft underwent review by the Federal Aviation Administration earlier, following a separate incident involving a Latam Airlines flight.
