A tragic incident involving a drunk driver has culminated in a 25 to 50-year prison sentence after 67-year-old Marshella Chidester crashed her SUV into a children’s party, resulting in the deaths of two young siblings. The devastating collision occurred on April 20, 2024, at the private Swan Boat Club in Berlin Township. Chidester was found guilty of second-degree murder, along with two counts of operating a vehicle while intoxicated, causing death, and five counts of operating under the influence, causing serious injury. The heart-wrenching accident claimed the lives of eight-year-old Alanah Phillips and her 4-year-old brother Zayn Phillips, while also leaving 15 others, including the siblings’ mother, with severe injuries. Surveillance footage captured Chidester driving her SUV at a speed of 44 mph leading up to the tragic crash. Additionally, it was reported that Chidester’s blood alcohol level was more than double the legal limit at the time of the incident, as revealed by AP News. During the court proceedings, Chidester’s attorney Bill Colovos contended that the fatal crash may have been the result of a leg issue causing her to press the gas pedal too firmly, rather than solely due to intoxication. However, this defence was ultimately rejected by the jury. As a consequence of her actions, Chidester will be eligible for parole in 25 years, according to ABC News.
