A teenager’s quest for acne-free skin turned into a fight for her life after a rare allergic reaction to medication almost took her life. Elle Dunn, now 27, shared her harrowing experience exclusively with PEOPLE, shedding light on the dangers of hidden drug allergies through her viral TikTok video.

Dunn’s journey began at just 15 years old when she was prescribed Minocycline, a common antibiotic, to address her acne issues. However, what seemed like a straightforward treatment soon escalated into a nightmare as she started experiencing jaw pain, rashes, and other alarming symptoms. The situation reached a critical point during her sister’s wedding, where she broke out in severe hives and developed a dangerously high fever of 106 degrees.
Rushed to the hospital, Dunn’s condition baffled doctors, with her health rapidly deteriorating. At one terrifying moment, she coded for nearly 30 minutes, leaving her family in panic and uncertainty. Despite slipping in and out of consciousness, Dunn vividly recalls the chaotic scene in the hospital room as medical professionals fought to keep her alive.
After initially being misdiagnosed with Parvovirus, Dunn’s symptoms persisted and worsened over several weeks, eventually leading to the correct diagnosis of Drug Reaction with Eosinophilia and Systemic Symptoms (DRESS) syndrome. This rare disorder can affect various organs in the body, necessitating intensive treatments to suppress the immune system and halt the severe reaction.
The road to recovery was long and challenging for Dunn, requiring weeks of high-dose steroid treatments and a cautious approach to medication moving forward. Reflecting on her journey, she emphasises the importance of consulting healthcare professionals before trying new medications to avoid potential life-threatening reactions like hers, highlighting the lasting impact it has had on her health and mindset.
Now, as she navigates life at 27, Dunn uses her platform to raise awareness about DRESS syndrome, hoping to educate and empower others to recognise early signs of severe drug reactions. By sharing her story on social media, she aims to prevent similar incidents and encourage individuals to prioritise their health and well-being.
While Dunn acknowledges the gravity of her ordeal, she considers herself fortunate to have survived with minimal long-term consequences compared to the potential debilitating outcomes that others may face. Her resilience and determination to turn a traumatic experience into a beacon of caution and awareness serve as a testament to her strength and advocacy in the face of adversity.
As Dunn continues to advocate for greater awareness of rare drug reactions and the importance of mindful medication use, her story stands as a poignant reminder of the unforeseen dangers that can lurk behind seemingly routine treatments. Through sharing her journey, she hopes to inspire others to take charge of their healthcare decisions and prioritise safety above all else.
