Marlee Brandon, a mother from Mississippi, embarked on an emotional journey after her one-year-old son, Bain, was unexpectedly diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. A parent’s intuition is powerful, as Marlee discovered when she noticed subtle changes in Bain’s behaviour six days after his first birthday. His irritability and teething led her to seek medical attention, where he was initially diagnosed with a bilateral ear infection and prescribed antibiotics. However, on the way home, Bain’s condition rapidly deteriorated, with severe symptoms including vomiting, laboured breathing, and extreme fatigue.
The situation escalated to a frantic trip to the emergency room, where Bain was ultimately diagnosed with type 1 diabetes on August 16, 2024, after being found to have diabetic ketoacidosis, a life-threatening complication. The family was airlifted to a children’s hospital, where they faced the reality of their new normal.
The sudden diagnosis was a shock to Marlee, who never anticipated such a life-altering event for her infant son. Bain spent three days in the ICU receiving critical care, while Marlee and her husband, Chandler, underwent intensive education on managing his medical needs. The experience was a turning point for Marlee, who realised the importance of advocacy and raising awareness for her son’s condition.
Looking back, Marlee acknowledges that there were signs indicating Bain’s diabetes, such as increased thirst, frequent urination, and weight loss. However, as a new mother without a family history of the disease, she initially attributed these changes to normal growth and development.
