A 47-year-old man from Cape Coral, Florida, found himself in a terrifying ordeal during his visit to Yellowstone National Park. The man was gored by a bison on Sunday, May 4, in the Lake Village area of the park, according to a news release by the National Park Service (NPS).

The incident occurred around 3:15 p.m. when the man approached the bison too closely. The Lake Village area is known for its dining and lodging facilities and is a common habitat for bison. Fortunately, the man sustained only minor injuries and received prompt medical attention from emergency personnel.

This alarming incident marks the first reported bison attack on a person in 2025. In the previous year, there were two reported incidents, with one occurring in April. An individual was charged with multiple offences, including disturbing wildlife after being attacked by a bison for kicking the animal. Subsequently, in June 2024, an elderly woman suffered serious injuries when a bison gored her near Yellowstone Lake.
Bison are recognised for their protective nature when they feel threatened, leading them to defend their territory. Yellowstone National Park has seen more incidents involving bison causing harm to individuals compared to any other animal in the park. These majestic creatures, the largest in North America, can weigh up to 2,000 pounds, stand six feet tall, leap high fences, and are proficient swimmers.
The NPS recommends that park visitors maintain a distance of at least 25 yards from large animals such as bison, elk, bighorn sheep, deer, moose, and coyotes. Additionally, a minimum distance of 100 yards should be kept from bears and wolves. Respecting wildlife’s space is crucial as wild animals can exhibit aggressive behaviour if they feel threatened.
As per the NPS, bison are unpredictable and can run three times faster than humans. This serves as a reminder of taking necessary precautions while exploring the wilderness and admiring wildlife in their natural habitat. It is imperative to adhere to park guidelines and exercise caution to ensure the safety and well-being of both visitors and wildlife.
