High School Lacrosse Players in Syracuse, New York, Engage in Fake Armed Kidnapping Incident as Part of Alleged Hazing – Legal Action Pursued for Nearly a dozen students from Westhill High School lacrosse team in Syracuse, New York found themselves in serious legal trouble this week following an alleged hazing incident that involved staging a fake armed kidnapping. The incident, described as “hazing on steroids” by Onondaga District Attorney William Fitzpatrick, unfolded when a student was driven to a remote area by a teammate who pretended to be lost. Several other students then emerged from the woods wearing black attire and armed with weapons, including a gun and a knife. They proceeded to blindfold the victim, restrain his hands, and lock him in the trunk of a vehicle before abandoning him in a secluded wooded location, as reported by WSYR. The victim was later safely returned home, whilst at least four other students managed to evade a similar fate. The severity of the incident was underscored by Fitzpatrick during a press conference, where he condemned the act as unacceptable and beyond comprehension in the modern era. He emphasised the gravity of the situation and expressed disbelief that such a heinous act could be carried out with the belief of impunity. Fitzpatrick gave the implicated students a 48-hour ultimatum to surrender themselves. Failure to comply would result in charges of second-degree kidnapping as adults, whereas cooperation would lead to misdemeanor charges in family court, sparing them from a criminal record. All 11 students obliged and turned themselves in within the stipulated time frame, indicating a recognition of the inappropriateness of their actions. The district attorney stressed the recklessness and insensitivity demonstrated by the offenders. The lacrosse team’s season was consequently cancelled, and the school superintendent, Stephen Durham, vowed to address the underlying cultural issues of the program to prevent any recurrence of such grave misconduct. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of hazing rituals and the importance of fostering a safe and respectful environment within educational institutions. The welfare of students should always be paramount, and any form of bullying or harassment must be met with swift and decisive action. It is imperative for schools and communities to work together to educate and sensitise young individuals on the detrimental effects of such behaviours and promote a culture of empathy, respect, and accountability. Let this unfortunate event be a catalyst for positive change and a firm stance against any form of violence or intimidation within our schools.
