A former surgeon in France is facing trial after being accused of raping and sexually assaulting hundreds of minors, with many of them reportedly under anesthesia. Joel Le Scouarnec, aged 73, is at the center of what is believed to be the largest child abuse trial in French history. The suspect was previously sentenced to 15 years in prison in December 2020 for the rape and sexual abuse of four children, as reported by the Associated Press.
Le Scouarnec’s trial is scheduled to commence later this month in the commune of Vannes, located in northwest France. According to reports from the BBC, he has been accused of assaulting 299 children between the years 1989 and 2014. The majority of the alleged victims were former patients of Le Scouarnec, with many of the assaults claimed to have taken place while the victims were under anesthesia, primarily in the Brittany region.

In December 2020, France 24 disclosed that Le Scouarnec received a 15-year prison term after being charged in 2017. This came following a testimony from a 6-year-old daughter of his neighbor, who was among his victims, based on information from the Agence France-Presse (AFP). Investigations revealed that he had raped two of his nieces from 1989 to 1999, as well as a 4-year-old hospital patient in 1993. Additionally, over 300,000 “indecent images of minors, including pictures of his two nieces” were found by police, as reported by France 24.
During the 2020 trial, the suspect admitted to raping his nieces, who were 35 and 30 years old at the time. Alongside child abuse images, authorities discovered child-sized sex dolls and diaries containing details of the alleged abuse spanning 25 years. Le Scouarnec claimed the entries in the diaries were “fantasies,” not actual occurrences, and wrote “I am a pedophile” multiple times.
The Associated Press noted that the suspect made remarks regarding the alleged sexual acts alongside the names of each child. Facing over 100 rape charges and more than 150 sexual assault charges, Le Scouarnec has confessed to some of the accusations but denied others. Lawyers representing some of the alleged victims expressed their clients’ trauma, including families of two men who died by suicide before the trial.
Francesca Satta, one of the legal representatives, mentioned her client’s regret over trusting a medical professional, which has left a lasting impact. The lawyer stated the client wished they had not known about the abuse. Lawyer Frederic Benoist, representing the child protection advocacy group La Voix de L’Enfant (The Child’s Voice), highlighted concerning institutional failures that enabled Le Scouarnec’s actions.
The suspect’s criminal history includes a four-month suspended prison sentence in 2005 for possessing and importing child pornography. The BBC reported that this sentence was due to a tip-off from the FBI to French authorities about Le Scouarnec accessing child abuse websites. The upcoming trial is scheduled to span from February to June, and various parties involved did not provide immediate comments upon request by PEOPLE.
Victims of sexual assault are encouraged to seek support through the National Sexual Assault Hotline at 1-800-656-HOPE (4673) or visit rainn.org. The trial of Joel Le Scouarnec serves as a stark reminder of the importance of protecting vulnerable individuals and holding perpetrators of abuse accountable for their actions.
