In a tragic turn of events, a selfless act by a police officer led to his untimely death at the hands of a killer. Jaremy Smith, the perpetrator, has now been sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the murder of New Mexico State Police Officer Justin Hare. The incident occurred when Officer Hare stopped to help Smith, who was stranded with a flat tire on U.S. Interstate 40 near Tucumcari.

Smith’s sentencing came after he pleaded guilty to a range of charges, including kidnapping resulting in death, carjacking resulting in death, and possession of a stolen firearm. The decision to not pursue the death penalty against Smith was made by U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland in August 2024, according to court documents.
The fateful encounter took place early in the morning when Officer Hare responded to reports of a stranded motorist on the highway shoulder. Smith approached Hare for help with his flat tire, and in a shocking turn of events, he shot the officer multiple times before fleeing the scene in Hare’s patrol car. Despite efforts to administer aid, Officer Hare succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at a local hospital.
Smith’s violent crime spree did not end there. Just days before the murder of Officer Hare, he was also implicated in the fatal shooting of a 52-year-old woman in South Carolina. The woman, identified as Jane Doe, was found shot execution-style in a secluded field near Nichols. Smith now faces state-level charges in South Carolina for her murder.
Following the incidents, Smith attempted to evade capture by fleeing to Albuquerque. However, thanks to a vigilant store clerk who recognised him from media coverage, he was apprehended shortly after. In a statement, U.S. Attorney Ryan Ellsion emphasised the gravity of Smith’s actions, highlighting the danger he posed to both the public and law enforcement officers.
The tragic loss of Officer Justin Hare serves as a stark reminder of the risks that law enforcement officers face in the line of duty. His selfless act of stopping to assist a stranded motorist ultimately led to his death at the hands of a callous criminal. The sentencing of Jaremy Smith may bring some measure of justice, but it cannot undo the devastation caused by his actions.
As the community mourns the loss of Officer Hare and the unnamed victim in South Carolina, it also reflects on the bravery and dedication of those who put their lives on the line to keep others safe. The legacy of Officer Hare will live on as a testament to the sacrifices made by law enforcement officers every day.
