Wild chimpanzees have been caught on camera bonding over alcoholic fruit in a manner similar to college students during spring break. Researchers have documented footage of chimpanzees actively seeking out and sharing fermented African breadfruit in Guinea-Bissau’s Cantanhez National Park. This behaviour has sparked fascination among scientists who suggest that the consumption of alcohol-containing foods could play a significant role in the social dynamics of these primates.

The study, published in Current Biology, indicates that chimpanzees not only share the fermented fruit but also incorporate it into their dietary habits. The alcohol content in the fruits from T. africana trees was found to range from 0.01 to 0.61% on average, with late-ripe fruits containing higher alcohol levels than their early-ripe counterparts. Researchers employed a portable breathalyzer to measure the alcohol content and observed that the wild chimpanzees exhibited a preference for the alcoholic fruits over other options.

Furthermore, researchers noted that sharing among the chimpanzees was a common occurrence, with 90% of shared fruits containing ethanol. The study highlighted that sharing events were predominantly passive, with the chimpanzee in possession of the fruit allowing others to partake without actively offering it. Notably, half of the sharing instances involved chimpanzees selecting late-ripening fruits or those with elevated alcohol concentrations.

The footage obtained for the study revealed that chimpanzees displayed ingenuity by using tools like cleavers and anvils to access the fruit at times. Researchers had to discreetly hide cameras in various locations to capture the wild chimps in their natural habitat, as they are unaccustomed to human presence. Through these recordings, researchers observed consistent preference and sharing behaviour among the chimpanzees towards the alcoholic T. africana fruit.
The researchers speculated that the chimpanzees’ familiarity with one another and their propensity to share could be attributable to familial connections, although this hypothesis remains unverified. Another theory posited by the study suggests that the consumption of fermented fruits, which can potentially reduce stress levels and trigger the endorphin system, may prompt social bonding among chimpanzees. This behaviour is believed to extend to other hominoids, such as great apes, given the prevalence of fermented fruits in nature.
Intriguingly, the study’s findings shed light on the complex social interactions and dietary preferences of wild chimpanzees, offering valuable insights into their behaviour patterns. By unravelling the significance of alcoholic fruit consumption in primate societies, researchers hope to deepen our understanding of the evolutionary roots of social bonding and stress-relief mechanisms across different species. The parallels drawn between chimpanzee behaviour and human social dynamics serve as a poignant reminder of the interconnectedness of all living beings on Earth.
