A courageous Illinois woman, Megan King, shares her incredible journey of resilience following a life-altering accident that left her internally decapitated. In a harrowing incident back in 2005, at the age of 16, Megan fell during a high school gym class while attempting to catch a soccer ball, resulting in severe damage to her right ankle and spine. Additionally, she suffered muscle tears on both shoulder blades, setting her on a challenging path of physical recovery. Despite undergoing 22 surgeries over the years, her condition continued to deteriorate, leaving her in persistent agony.

After years of medical uncertainty, Megan was diagnosed with Hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (hEDS) in 2015, a genetic disorder impacting connective tissues, joints, and skin integrity. This condition, particularly the hEDS variant, commonly presents with joint hypermobility and skin fragility, leading to chronic pain and frequent dislocations. Following her diagnosis, Megan was fitted with a halo brace to stabilise her neck and spine to promote healing. However, a devastating twist of fate unfolded as she was internally decapitated during the removal of the brace, a perilous situation that is often fatal.

Internally decapitated, a condition termed Atlanto-occipital dislocation (AOD), Megan faced overwhelming odds, with a staggering 90% mortality rate in such cases. Swift medical intervention was crucial as doctors raced against time to save her life. Through emergency surgery, a complex spinal fusion was performed to reconnect her skull and spine, merging the bones together to form a singular unit. The aftermath of this traumatic experience meant Megan underwent a staggering 37 surgeries to navigate her arduous path to recovery.
The aftermath of these life-altering events has left Megan immobile from her skull down to her pelvis, rendering her spine incapable of movement. Describing herself as a “human statue,” she remains steadfast in her determination to persevere through the challenges that accompany her new reality. Despite the physical limitations imposed by her condition, Megan’s spirit remains unbroken as she strives to reacquaint herself with daily activities, symbolised by a recent victorious bowling session that elicited jubilant reactions from her support system.
With doctors attributing the internal decapitation to a combination of her high school fall and the joint fragility associated with hEDS, Megan’s journey epitomises resilience and the unwavering human spirit in the face of adversity. As she acclimatises to her transformed body, Megan embarks on a voyage of self-discovery, continually pushing boundaries and defying the limitations imposed by her condition. Her story serves as a poignant reminder of the indomitable strength that resides within us, inspiring others to navigate their own tribulations with fortitude and courage.
In an exclusive interview, Megan King reflects on her transformative journey, shedding light on the challenges she has encountered and the victories she continues to celebrate. Her narrative not only underscores the importance of resilience in the face of adversity but also exemplifies the power of the human will to endure and thrive in the most daunting of circumstances.
