U.S. Pastor Allegedly Abducted in South Africa Rescued, 3 Dead: Authorities

A United States pastor who was reportedly kidnapped in South Africa has been successfully rescued, with three individuals confirmed dead in the process, according to local law enforcement authorities.

​Missionary Josh Sullivan, aged 45, was found unharmed in a vehicle at a secure location on the 15th of April, five days after he was believed to have been taken captive. The South African Police Service revealed that the pastor’s recovery involved a high-intensity shoot-out that resulted in the fatalities of three unidentified suspects.

Sullivan, who was allegedly abducted by a group of armed individuals during a service at the Fellowship Baptist Church in Motherwell, outside Gqeberha, was discovered at a safe house in the city of Gqeberha. The South African Police Service (SAPS) shared in a statement that the successful rescue operation occurred as officers approached the safe house and identified a vehicle on the premises.

As law enforcement confronted the suspects inside the vehicle, the individuals attempted to flee and opened fire on the team. In response, the officers engaged tactically, leading to a confrontation in which the three suspects were ultimately fatally wounded.

Following his recovery, Sullivan was assessed by medical personnel and deemed to be in excellent health. The SAPS requested privacy for the victim and his family during their recovery process as investigations into the incident continue.

Reportedly, the kidnapping took place during a sermon at the church when four masked and armed male suspects entered the premises. According to Police spokesman Captain Andre Beetge, the perpetrators stole two phones and escaped in Sullivan’s silver Toyota Fortuner. The vehicle was later located abandoned with no sign of Sullivan.

Rev. Jeremy Hall, a local pastor, suggested that the motive behind the abduction was likely financial, noting that the incident occurred during a prayer meeting attended by about 30 individuals, including Sullivan’s wife and children.

The Fellowship Baptist Church in Tennessee, where Sullivan is affiliated, had requested prayers for him following his abduction. The church expressed gratitude for the prayers and support received during the challenging period, celebrating his safe return upon his rescue.

Sullivan has been a part of the Fellowship Baptist Church staff since 2012 and embarked on his missionary journey to South Africa in 2013. The church’s social media posts reflected their relief and joy upon learning of his safe recovery, encouraging continued prayers for the Sullivan family.
