A Texas man named Marshall Garrett is in legal trouble on multiple fronts after his three pit bulls tragically killed a neighbour. The incident occurred on March 23 when the dogs managed to escape from Garrett’s property and attacked his 65-year-old neighbour, Harriette Phillips. The woman was fatally mauled by the pit bulls while attempting to defend herself with a hammer. Disturbingly, investigators found the victim’s hair and shreds of her clothes inside the dogs’ stomachs, indicating the severity of the attack.
According to a criminal complaint obtained by PEOPLE, neighbours reported that Garrett’s dogs had a history of being aggressive and escaping their enclosure. One neighbour even claimed to have been bitten by one of the dogs recently. Detective Ramon Garcia detailed in the complaint that Phillips was seen frantically trying to protect herself from the dogs before they overpowered her. The pit bulls continued to attack her until she was unable to move or make any sound, leading to her tragic death.
On April 9, the Harris County District Attorney’s Office announced that Marshall Garrett would be charged with three felony counts of attack by dog resulting in death in connection with the fatal mauling. Following Texas law, the three pit bulls were euthanized due to their involvement in the deadly attack. However, this was not Garrett’s only legal issue, as the day before these charges were filed, he was also charged with murder in a separate case dating back to last year.
In the previous incident, Garrett was implicated in the death of a 69-year-old man after allegedly striking him in the head during a confrontation over stolen money. Video evidence captured Garrett delivering the fatal blow to the man, who later succumbed to his injuries in the hospital.
