A Michigan man has been sentenced to prison for sending a false bomb threat to a cruise ship, causing panic and disruption. Joshua Lowe, 19, was handed an eight-month prison sentence on Monday, April 16, following indictments by the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Western District of Michigan. The incident, which took place in January 2024, involved Lowe sending an email to Carnival Cruise Lines while a cruise was en route from Miami to Jamaica.

The email, which stated, “Hey, I think someone might have a bomb on your sunrise cruise ship,” prompted a thorough search of over a thousand staterooms by ship personnel. The cruise was escorted to port by Jamaican authorities, causing significant disruption and fear among passengers and crew. Fortunately, the threat turned out to be a hoax, with no physical harm resulting from the incident.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Nils Kessler emphasized the seriousness of bomb threats, stating that those who engage in such actions should expect severe consequences. The U.S. Attorney’s Office, Western District of Michigan, did not provide immediate comment on the incident, highlighting the potential risks and dangers associated with false threats and hoaxes.
FBI agents were able to trace the email back to Lowe, who was living with his girlfriend’s family at the time of the incident. Lowe admitted to sending the threatening email out of frustration after being left behind to care for the family’s pets while they went on the cruise. His actions not only caused chaos and distress but also diverted critical law enforcement resources.
In a letter to U.S. District Judge Paul Maloney, Lowe expressed remorse, accepting full responsibility for his actions and acknowledging the impact of his hoax. In addition to his prison term, Lowe will be required to pay restitution for the expenses incurred as a result of the false bomb threat, further underscoring the serious consequences of his actions.
Cheyvoryea Gibson, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI in Michigan, condemned Lowe’s actions, stressing the detrimental effects of such hoaxes on law enforcement resources and public safety. The FBI remains committed to holding individuals who engage in such intimidation tactics accountable for their actions.
The sentencing serves as a reminder of the severe penalties imposed for making false threats and the importance of ensuring the safety and security of individuals on cruise ships and other public spaces. The incident highlights the need for vigilance and caution in dealing with such situations, emphasising the importance of swift and decisive action in response to security threats.
As the case concludes with Lowe’s sentencing, authorities continue to emphasise the gravity of making false threats, aiming to deter individuals from engaging in similar actions in the future. The incident serves as a cautionary tale and a reminder of the potential consequences of irresponsible and reckless behaviour.
